zenmindbeginner Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 Pics of a 1996 Daytona neck compared with two 2010 American Special Strat and Tele necks. There's been some speculation about neck pockets and scale lengths, so I set them up together and took some shots. All three have the same scale length The side by side frontal shot shows that the Daytona and Tele heels are similar. You can see that they all have a similar radius as well. The Daytona being a bit slimmer. Daytona and Strat Daytona and Tele Neck Pocket/Heel Close-ups Daytona(L) and Strat® Tele (L) and Daytona ® The Daytona is slightly taller than the tele neck and will sit a little higher in the neck pocket. I hope that this helps in people building Hamer partscasters, it's a great project to involve yourself with, you'll end up getting a custom T-51 or Daytona when you're done. So, the T-51 and Daytona necks only differ in the flaring curve of the headstock under the logo. The neck pockets of Daytona and T-51 are tele shaped. Warmoth will make a Strat body with a tele neck pocket for no extra charge. Daytona necks work perfectly with stock tele bodies.
Carl.B Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 Anyone know where you can buy a Daytona or T-51 neck?Do you have to try and pick one up off ebay, craigslist or someother board?
kanegon Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Just got me a T51 and this is very useful information! This means I could put a vintage carve like a Baja neck on my T-51, correct? I have no issues with my 12" radius CP60 Strat, and I love all my 14" Hamers, so this maybe a moot point, but I am surprised there aren't more customized (partscastered) T51s and Daytonas ou there. Love to see even one example...
kanegon Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 Whoa! Are these all proper Daytonas or is there a lot of Fender (spec) mixed in? Do Daytonas and T51s play nice with Fender vintage spec? I'm not sure I'd keep the Wilky on my T51, it just doesn't look right. Of course, sound is the ultimate consideration. I love the Callaham parts on my Strat, they are great, no koolaid. As OP suggests, I think Strat necks would be an issue on these Hamers with their cuved heels, we'll see how things go with the 14.5 radius.
cmatthes Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 The top two are "proper" Daytonas, and the doubleneck Daytona has a custom made Musikraft Korina body (it only weighs 3.3 lbs). No Fender parts!
Ting Ho Dung Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 Daytona bodies don't work with Fender necks since the body was routed for a "taller" heal. The difference is 3/32 and is enough to cause the fretboard to bind on the pickguard. (don't ask me how I know. I just know ) I have a T-51 neck on my Daytona from the factory. So the T-51 and Daytona necks are compatible in a Daytona body and I would assume a T-51 body. This would also make me think you can't use either Daytona or T-51 neck in a fender body without routing. Linky to my daytona with t-51 neck. http://www.hamerfanclub.com/forums/topic/52341-hamer-daytona-sv-t-51-neck/
kanegon Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 Has anyone tried putting a Fender (spec'ed) neck on a T51 or Daytona? You'd think 3/32 is within normal variance, but maybe it's just plain not doable. Suppose you could devise a shim if it were absolutely necessary. Would be good to know should you ever want to try vintage radius with one of these hot rods.Lovely Daphne Daytona, by the way. It actually looks better with the T51 headstock! cmatthes Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 You could put a Tele neck on a Daytona (or a T-51), but not a Strat neck.
Ting Ho Dung Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 The strat neck requires a 3/32 shim. Hobby shops have birch plywood that is 3/32 but I believe the tone and sustain would be affected. I have one around here somewhere unless I threw it out. I'll send it to you if you wish and I still have it.
kanegon Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 Very kind of you, but I was just curious. Thanks, man! The strat neck requires a 3/32 shim. zorrow Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 That would be cool having a Daytona neck on a Warmoth V body with a pickguard, three single coils and a sustainblock bridge. My perfect "Strat"!
