What does paint stick to best?

I'm having a theme airbrushed on a guitar that will include the pickguard/backplate/pickup rings. If it will be a player, is durability a concern if using the standard plastic materials? Would aluminum, wood or something else be a better choice?

I know plastic can be painted but is it the best option, since once it's done, it's done.

Different materials will require different primers. Be sure you know what type of plastic is used on the rings, pickguard, and plates. If the pickups are going to be painted, find out what type of plastic is used on the bobbins unless you are going with covered pickups. If there is wax on a pickup polepiece or screw it will need to be cleaned carefully.
