Hackubus Posted September 10, 2005 Posted September 10, 2005 Ok bear w me folks....I'm kinda a newb to the world of Hamer. I've got a Standard Custom that I put Timbuckers in shortly after I got it. I mean like 30 minutes after it got off the truck kind of shortly. So I have no idea what a stock Duncan loaded Hamer sounds like. (and personally don't care...me no gusta the JB/59 combo SD p'ups) Here's what I'm wondering about. For the most part, do you guys with both Hamers & Gibsons find that the Hamers are LOUDER thru the amp than the Gibsons? I ask because when I switch from the Hamer Std to say a LP there's a slight but noticable volume drop. I had figured it was just my LP lacking in some area (and possibly a shit job on my part with my wiring of the RS kit in it).But the other night at practice it was very noticeably louder than my 57 LP Jr (stock), a ES 335 (stock) & the LP that I'd brought that evening. Is it the Tims?Is it them killer Hamer pots? (I just friggin love those Hamer pots)That secksy Switchcraft plug?My ears? FWIW I don't really see it as a problem, but just find it curious.
paults Posted September 10, 2005 Posted September 10, 2005 It may be that the Timbuckers are hotter pickups, or they may just be closer to the strings : )
SteveB Posted September 10, 2005 Posted September 10, 2005 It may be that the Timbuckers are hotter pickups, or they may just be closer to the strings : ) That'd be my guess. Lower the Tim's to match the level of the Paul, or raise the Paul's pups to match if it's a problem.
John E Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 Amplified, I suspect it's something in the pups, as Paults said.If you said the Standards was acoustically louder, I'd say it was Hamer's neck joint. As you may know, Hamer uses a large dovetail joint; the wood at the heel of the neck is intentionally made too large for the body and the luthiers carve away at it the minimum necessary to jam it into the body. It's only a slight exaggeration to say they don't need to glue it. One of the things I LOVE about my Hamers is the great connection between the neck and the body.
BCR Greg Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 Hamers are like old Juniors, loud acoustically because there is a hell of a lot less glue between the neck and body in the joint. The typical Les Paul neck joint (the exception being Juniors) is over cut, and filler added after the neck angle is jigged up. Hamers are hand chiseled to such a tight fit that you can pick one up before the glue is applied and shake the neck without the body shifting AT ALL. Done it. Well made, and tough as hell.
Hackubus Posted September 12, 2005 Author Posted September 12, 2005 Thanks for the replies fellers. Very nice pics Greg. That's a hefty neck joint for sure when held up to the Gibson. Yeah this is when it's amplified. I'm too damn deaf to hear it acoustically. It's not a big deal to me, I just noticed that the other day. Wondered if anyone else had ran into that. BTW, the Tims are raised just a RCH above the p'up rings.
BCR Greg Posted September 12, 2005 Posted September 12, 2005 The pics are from an older factory tour, click the "HFC events" tab above and take a look.
