BadgerDave Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 My application would be my new 50th Anniversary Gibson SG. The stock 57 Classics are OK, but a little bright.
murkat Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 Classics are setup prone. You can tweek, set them up to taste. Classics are very touchy and touch sensitive. They are benchmark. Tom holmes knew what he was doing when at Gibson. A. Adjust them alot, they are sensitive. B. pot them, or repot them, it smooths them out a lil bit. C. Cheap pots and caps, change the caps to pio's, fifties wiring. send it to me and I will squeeze out all tone avail in it.
Scottcrud Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Murkat, my favorite gibson pickups were the 57 Classic plus's. Who made those? My least fave gibson pickups were those turd Iommi's. Sorry to hijack.
murkat Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Classics are Tom Holmes's venture during his tenor at Gibson. He refined The "Shaw era pickup".
The Shark Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 My application would be my new 50th Anniversary Gibson SG. The stock 57 Classics are OK, but a little bright. You'll love them. I prefer the Legends, but the Dr. Vintage models are killer. I've since switched to Ian Anderson's (Ian A. Guitars in California) hand-wound pickups. They are the best I've tried. And I've tried just about everything.
Disturber Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 The set of 57 Classics I tried were far from bright. They sounded fab. Warm, ballsy and with a nice treble bite on top, very nice paf's. They were early ones, don't know if they still sound the same...?
gtone Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 Hmm...an SG with '57 Classics sounds like a very toneful pairing. I'd be inclined to take Jay's (Murkat's) advice on this one before swapping 'em out.
murkat Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 Hey Dave, since the SG was made, built in the USA plant, could be anything under the hood. A well made CPA, caps, potted pickups, etc. will go a long way for that SG.
BadgerDave Posted June 19, 2011 Author Posted June 19, 2011 I've heard that the Gibson installed repro bumble bee caps used in the Historics are fakes. Just cheap disc caps inside a purely cosmetic case. Any truth to that?I'll spend some time tweaking the classics and the wiring. Thanks for the advice.
murkat Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 yes, the reissue BB's are just sheep in wolf,s clothing. But, in this case, that is what the customer wanted. But there are some nice caps out there in the world, far better than the fake BB's.
