hamerican gigolo Posted July 3, 2011 Posted July 3, 2011 I have a '99 Newport. My ? is,i love the guitar but i HATE the Grover Imperial tuners. Is there a set that i could retrofit without drilling a bunch of holes. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Disturber Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 What is it that you don't like with the Grovers? Mine stay in tune perfectly and are easy to work with. I have never had issues with Grovers, nor Schallers.I don't think you have to drill to fit the Sperzel looking tuners, but I am not 100% sure.

I know there is another set i could use.
tbonesullivan Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 technicaly, I believe those are grover "super rotomatics", which have the imperial buttons put on the rotomatic body. If you want you can get replacement buttons for them. I just got some in ebony to help reduce the headstock weight of my SG supreme.

Then again,i'm not the sharpest tool in the shed.
Uncle Thor's Hamer Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 I replaced the Grovers on my Newport with new Grover 18:1 ratio locking tuners. The old tuners were worn and didn't work as nicely as they should, whereas the new ones are excellent. They fit the holes perfectly, and in fact that was the tough part - finding replacements that would fit the little screw hole position. The imperial buttons are long, and at least on my Newport the holes for the main post of the tuners are slightly further from the edge of the headstock than other guitars. So the art deco imperial buttons look normal. If you go to a different style of button it will sit slightly closer to the edge of the wood than is "normal", though it doesn't look strange. You can see in this picture that the stems don't stick out as far.
Caddie Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 This the headstock of my Newport Pro Custom. If memory serves me right I bought the pearloid tuner buttons from from allparts.com. I did not consider the guitar to be headstock heavy. And as far as I was concerned they worked great. I changed the buttons purely because i thought they looked cool. Pure vanity. caddie
hamerican gigolo Posted July 11, 2011 Author Posted July 11, 2011 They look nice,Caddie. The tuners work fine but i hate the tuning keys on my Newport.
