New caps vs. NOS caps

Someone experimented with capacitors and also tried NOS caps vs. new models?

I've bought a NOS Sprague cap for a strat configuration one or two years ago and have been very very happy with it. The argument from the seller was that the NOS caps have the dedicated values but lack some electronic quality that allows some dirty electrons go through the cab as well. That in turn delivers special sound behavior we like to hear.

NOS caps are not like NOS tubes which are superior for many reasons. Caps on the other hand, specifically electrolytic caps, even if they appear to retain their labeled values, once put under the stress of running voltages through them and having to deal the heat build up have a tendency to fail at an accelerated rate. They dry out over time whether they are being used or not. I know many will differ but I am speaking from first hand experience and not repeating internet blather. In a guitar you can get away with it and due to the breakdown of the materials may give a certain desirable breakup. They may also give you some less desirable noises as well. Pay your money and take your chances.

Mustard caps, Orange drops, Black Cats, etc, are a different structure and many have managed to survive new builds and replacements.

As always, JMHO.

The "vintage" caps to avoid are mica and electrolytic.

Electrolytics, & oil filled, dry out over time.

Mica caps (not normally used in guitars) become unstable.

The orange drop caps being polyester, stay very stable over long periods of time.

Black Cats also age well.

I'd never bother with a NOS electrolytic. They all fail - it's just a matter of when.

As to mustards and orange drops: they might work fine, but I really doubt anyone can hear the difference.
