Northsider Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 I have a '79 Sunburst with what appears to be a F spaced Dimarzio in the bridge. Is this possible?
gtone Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 Northsider - did you acquire this Sunburst from a Canadian seller? If so, there's a good chance I'm familiar with this particular one. PM me if that's the case.
Northsider Posted September 21, 2011 Author Posted September 21, 2011 Nope, I got it out of Nebraska. So what was the deal? Dimarzio didn't feel the need for Gibson spaced? Or Hamer to use them?
murkat Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 memory recalls, but could be wrong,"F" spaced pickups were not made till mid 80's in the usa.I think Schaller is one that got the wheels rolling on that...I could be wrong...
Mark Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 I have a 1980 Sunburst, and I think the bridge pickup is also f spaced, the poles to not line up under the strings, but they do at the neck pick up. The bridge I thought was stock and the neck was a replacement. Also I think the bridge pick up is going out on me, ( it sounds really distorted and there is no clarity on a single note). What is a good replacement pick-up?? Thanks for your patience and time.-Mark
Disturber Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 Old Sunbursts should have nothing but old Dimarzio paf´s in them. Other pups are blasphemy. You can pick up an early 80s double creme Dimarzio Paf on ebay.
serial Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 Murkat is correct-no F-spaced pickups until the late 80s. In any event, no way in Hell were they stock on an early Hamer Sunburst. Word to the wise, I've run into any number of people who claim that they have "F-spaced" pickups that are just standard Dimarzio PAFs, etc. String paths don't always line up the same from the bridge over the center of the poles. Remember that nut width is smaller than the width of the bridge, so all of the strings are going to be angle inward from the bridge to get there. That means that the strings aren't going to bisect the polepieces in the same way over the neck and bridge pickups.
tobereeno Posted December 23, 2011 Posted December 23, 2011 hell, the JBs on 90s Floyd-equipped Centauras are normal-spaced. Drove me nuts, how the polepieces didn't align. All replaced with trem-spaced pickups.btw - 12-string Californians are normal-spaced.
