Question

Hi

I need your advice, because I want to change my Hamer sunburst xt bridge

when I play the 3rd cord on the 12th fret, the sustain is very little, as if there where a resonance interference.

Should I go for a tonepros, like US studio; or Gotoh

thank you

PS : the new forum design is cool :)

Warning - don't spend too much on modding an import, as you'll not likely recoup the expense if/when you sell. As such, the less expensive Gotoh would probably suffice instead of the more pricey TonePros model. FWIW, I went with the Gotoh Nashville setup on my import Standard Korina "polishing a turd" project and it's worked out well - much sturdier and less buzzy than stock, more precise intonation adjustment also. There were some tweaks needed, though. Stud holes had to be drilled out by a machinist friend to fit (don't know if Gotoh makes a model compatible with the imports, but I couldn't find one - YMMV). Also, the saddles on these come just lightly notched - some filing/dressing may be required depending on wants/needs. Some filing was needed to match the fretboard radius of my import (yours might be the same),

Just my two cents...

No - local dealer could not get the Nashville in metric model unfortunately. No worries as there was no charge from my buddy and the fit is perfect.

Standard issue asian POS metric bridge. Anything metric will be an improvement.

Tonepros is really better than Gotoh ?

2 times more expensive

Those stock bridges really are a POS - the intonation would vary by as much as 5 cents either way on a digital tuner due to the slop in the adjustment screws!

If your problem is damping at the 12th fret, then you have a fret issue and could use a leveling, crown and polish. Much more expensive than a bridge upgrade.

I guarantee that if you replaced the bridge, you would still have the same problem.

I just pick my guitar to have a jam, and I noticed that there is still damping problem when I play an 12th harmonic on the 3rd cord

it can't be a fret problem

most of them are a 12" radius.

most inexpensive Asian import guitars are a sloppy radiused fret boards.

I think murkat is saying that the build quality of the imports is sloppier. In other words, you might not get a proper and even radius across the fretboard/frets as a result of the tolerances, materials and manufacturing methods used with these models.

I'd suggest that you do what I did - get the Gotoh and set up each string individually at the saddle. That way, you should minimize the trouble spots to the extent possible (barring troublesome frets as Zenmindbeginner has suggested). Probably not the ultimate solution, but is perhaps an economical and practical way of dealing with the situation given that it's an import. If it were a Hamer USA model, of course, it'd be worth having a proper setup done by a good tech to get the bugs ironed out (but then again, odds are the build quality wouldn't have you in this pickle in the first place). If you can't solve this problem economically, don't throw a lot of money or effort at it - it's simply not worth it. Either buy yourself another import or better yet, get a US model - they're a bargain by any measure!

There is no clear answer in theory. I'd suggest to stop talking and start doing.

Don't forget to post pics of the change. B)

Cured your problem - congrats! ;)

(Bet you can get much more precise intonation settings measured at 12th fret too).
