HamerHokie Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 We recently did an outdoor show down at the Inner Harbor so I hired a recording company to do a live recording. He was able to set up two ambient mikes to catch the open air mix at the soundboard, and he was able to pull a few channels from the soundboard as well. That helped bring the vocals out front better in the recording. I used my Artist Korina P-90 the whole gig, through my Mesa Lonestar set up with EL-34s. The only effect I used was the Fulltone Fat Boost. Note - this should show once and for all what P-90s are supposed to sound like. I ripped MP3s from the finished CDs and made this primitive webpage for downloads. I think the ones that turned out the best were Cold Shot, Before You Accuse Me, Boom Boom, One Way Out, Feelin Alright, and Honky Tonk Woman. The big problem was that the soundman didn't have our lead singer's harmonica in the mix at all, so you can't hear him. I think we can dub that in. http://www.vtfunkmaster.com/dangertones/rashfield.html
Moose Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 Yeah, that's what P90s sound like. I love the slightly roiling distortion you can get out of 'em. The whole band sounds great. So, tell me what it's like to play with a keyboardist that doesn't suck? Guitar and keys really compliment each other in the little that I've listened to here.
bobbymack Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 Nice deliberate tempo, rare in alot of live stuff imho...Jump the bass up some in the mix when you're remixing.
jettster Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 Listened to Cold shot..... Everything sounded really good!Looks like the Lonestar is working well for you.
MCChris Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 I just checked out "Born on the Bayou." Great job, excellent dirty tones!
HamerHokie Posted September 28, 2005 Author Posted September 28, 2005 So, tell me what it's like to play with a keyboardist that doesn't suck? Guitar and keys really compliment each other in the little that I've listened to here. It took us about a year and half to find that particular keyboardist. We auditioned about 15 or so unsuccessfully. No one had the feel or the chops. This guy is the real deal.I was the one pushing for a keyboardist because I think the guitar-bass-drums-piano/organ lineup is the strongest for the kind of stuff we do. A horn section would be even better but three more mouths to feed wouldn't cut it for us right now.
HamerHokie Posted September 28, 2005 Author Posted September 28, 2005 Nice deliberate tempo, rare in alot of live stuff imho...Jump the bass up some in the mix when you're remixing. I'm afraid the soundman had the bass mixed too low, which is why you don't hear it well on computer speakers. On a real stereo at WAV bandwidth, it sounds much better, but not optimum.
hardheartedbill Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 sounds great, band is tight, vocals are good, groove is really nice and I dig your guitar style!
HamerHokie Posted September 28, 2005 Author Posted September 28, 2005 sounds great, band is tight, vocals are good, groove is really nice and I dig your guitar style! Thanks, we were bone tired, having played the night before late, and that was our first show with that drummer. He fit in like a worn pair of shoes. I think my playing was meh.
Jamie K Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 Sounds real good. Guitar tone is really sweet! Ahhh, P-90's...suddenly I miss my old Special. Was wondering who did the recording for you and what did it run you. I'm a fellow Marylander and am just about to do some research on putting together a live recording. Any info would be much obliged!Jamie
Rockola Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 I just checked out "Born on the Bayou." Great job, excellent dirty tones! That was the first one I grabbed. Excellent.

Jamie K Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 Thanks HamerHokie....got em bookmarked! That is incredibly inexpensive!Jamie
HamerHokie Posted September 29, 2005 Author Posted September 29, 2005 Thanks HamerHokie....got em bookmarked! That is incredibly inexpensive! Here's a tip - if you're doing an outdoor show with a number of bands, give them the band list and he'll contact them all. It is much less expensive to have him set up once and record all the bands - that way you'll be able to get it in for his minimum price easily.
silentman Posted September 29, 2005 Posted September 29, 2005 Sounds good. Imagine what P90's would sound like in a duotone!
