Motherbuckers

Question

Were the PUPs Hamer used in the triple-coil "Motherbucker" setups specific to that pickup cluster....or can I swap them out with old OBLs without having problems? Will the hotter pickups/magnets cause interference with each other butted right next to one another and make it unusable?

I've occasionally seen some Motherbuckers that look like at least one of the PUPs have been changed. Any guidance of the "do's and dont's" from anyone who has modded one?

As long as the Single Coil doesn't have the flange on the bottom it will fit. It is possible to turn them around if they have the bezel but you may still have clearence issues. I'm sure someone will come buy with all the info. But 81/82 have Paf/Dimarzio Single and the 82 foward where Slammer Hum, Slammer Single. Ninties were JB and I can't remember the SIngle. Murkat has mine sitting in a box he could look and see what it is.

I'm trying something completely different with my Throwback Build and hopefully i'm not being a pain in Murkats Ass. :)

The original mightymite motherbucker is

an actual 3 coils on one mounting bezel.

They show up on ebay for a good amount of coin.

the Hamer setup is an actual humbucker with a

single coil (1 Dimarzio humbucker coil on it own bezel)

next to the humbucker.

the single has no protuding wire flange like a Fender pup.

I once crammed a Custom Custom and a Hot Rails single with flange into the triple coil ring on my old Prototype. Not ideal, but it is doable.

Not ideal but how did it sound? I my own twisted mind I know what I want one to sound like, now all I have to do is wait and see if it comes out sounding as good as it looks.

Here's a pic of the Hamer single coil - this is the Dimarzio from the '80s, but I have a few of the '90s Phantom Duncan single coils (unused) that will be going into something down the line...essentially the same thing.

SD will put for a small upcharge any Single Coil you want onto a narrow base. Well all but one ;) but I don't want to give that away yet. :). Rio Grande will also do it for (if I remeber correctly and upcharge of $5.00. Robin used that type of baseplate in the Tonemonger Guitar.

Dimarzio is no charge for a single coil with a narrow base. I tried a few different configurations in my '98 Phantom. Best for me was a Rio Grande BBQ Bucker and a Dimarzio Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues II.
