Destring-ing a Kahler

stonge

Question

Posted

got an old parts strat lying around with a Kahler, and I need to pull the strings for maintenance (polish frets, remove pickguard and change batteries etc). I checked up on the Kahler site, but my trem is an older version that does not have the setscrew through the frame behind the bridge to lock the bridge. I don't have any other Kahlers and haven't worked on this guitar for at least a decade, so I forgot if there was anything special that I need to do before removing all the strings (it's the first guitar that mrs stonge ever bought for me, so I'd prefer not to bugger it up lol). Thanks for any guidance anyone can provide.

Nothing special. I just loosen all the strings a ton, then cut 'em from low to high (holding both pieces with my fingers so one end doesn't accidentally pop and nick the top). Leave the bar on, and when you restring just push it down a little to get the first string started and Bob's your uncle. Super easy. :)

When restring,

(On my V, and use the Kahler a lot)

I would solder the wrap part at end of the string, ball end,

on the High E and B strings.

I use to break them all the time.

soldering the end wrap would deter breaking, etc.

What Jay said. I used to use the Ernie Ball RPS (Reinforced Slain Strings), mostly because I was too lazy to do the solder thing. Never had a problem but I'm pretty easy on strings.

What Jay & Tom said, but here's an even better deal- SIT strings. I switched to these when the D'Addario KXLs became impossible to find. SIT is an Ohio string company, AWESOME quality (have not broken one since I switched and i am brutal on the Kahler) and fantastic price- you can get 'em for under $5 a set, plus each set comes with an extra high E and B string.

Check with Kim Keller. I am sure he has another ol' Khaler hanging around the factory that you can use for parts.
