What do you know about photograph film converters?

Like anyone who is 1000 years old, I have a shit-ton of old pictures in a box in the closet. I was always going to scan them and put 'em on a disk, but now I see there's some new-fangled dealies that will scan your film and convert it to .jpg or .tiff files.

What's the scoop?

I just go the local Fed Ex store. They have machines that will put 40 pictures on a disk. About $5. From wallet sized to 8x10, all in very high resolution.

Works for me.

...which wouldn't be bad for a couple hundred photos. I'd guess we're closer to the 3,000 - 4,000 range. It gets a bit pricey then.

I've seen a few of those gizmos for less than $100 that get decent reviews. I may just have to eenie-meenie-miney-mo.

I have a scanner that digitizes film negatives. Not impressed with the quality or lack thereof.

I think you'd do better scanning the prints.

When my wife made the move to digital, I bought her a Nikon CoolScan V ED to convert all her negatives and slides. Impressive 4000dpi (optical) scans all around.

Even though they're not made any longer, they still command a good price on eBay. If you bought one you'd probably get a good chunk back when you sold it.

There's also the CoolScan 5000 ED that has an adapter that allows you to scan a roll at a time, but they're $$$$.
