gorch Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Since I have the iRig HD I think of stereo recording with the iPad. Is anyone familiar with this? What's the Hamer of stereo recording interfaces with the iPad?
Teh Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 For basic stereo field recording, I have a Zoom H4. A lot more compact and less intrusive. XLR inputs also let me plug outboard mics or board feeds into it if necessary. Any editing can be done back at home on the DAW after. For quick & dirty stuff where quality doesn't matter (song ideas, meetings), I use the recorder function on the iPhone. My iPad gets used a lot in a musical context but not as a recorder. I use it as a lead sheet prompter and sheet music library via the 'OnSong' app and an AirTurn bluetooth pedal. I've also used it as a bluetooth DAW controller via the AC-7 app.
Montelovesco Posted November 4, 2013 Posted November 4, 2013 Used the iRig (probably older version) and dumped it on ebay after a few hours. Working with the Apogee Jam now. Far better IMHO since it uses the dock connector and not the headphones connector. Result: better sound, less feedback...
gorch Posted November 4, 2013 Author Posted November 4, 2013 Giving more background. I love my Rockman XPR that's got stereo outs. The other day I came to find that Cubase has an iPad version called Cubasis to offer that's almost a full DAW. Although I bought the iRig HD that's creating great sound and connected to the dock port, I am seeking for some interface that offers stereo recording through the dock connector. Say kind of a stereo iRig.Anyone managed to digitally connect a Zoom H2 or H4 to the iPhone?
Tres Aardvarks Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 Well, I have this setup though I have yet to use it (as I left my playing buddies in Colorado)...get the USB adapter, plug the Omega in, launch Garageband. http://www.lexiconpro.com/en-US/products/omegaNow, since I've been recording track by track, I use the Apogee Jam. If you want one of the really slick expensive interfaces, there's quite a few of those(like this:http://www.alesis.com/iodock)
gorch Posted November 5, 2013 Author Posted November 5, 2013 Recent web scan turned out the camera connection kit is the trick. It should allow to connect the Zoom H2 as well as the Terratec DMX 6Fire USB to the iPad. I might be willing to invest in Cubasis, the iPad version of Cubase any time soon. With that potential, I dream of connecting the DR-880 too. It would even be interesting to connect more than one device at a time through a USB hub. What's necessary is that the device should bring in it's own power supply to be successfully connected. That's potentially good news to be proofed in the house yet.
mathman Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 This should work. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/910477-REG/rode_ixy_stereo_recording_microphone.html
Tres Aardvarks Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 the Blue Yeti will work too (provided you run it through a powered USB hub) http://bluemic.com/yeti/and of course they have the Spark which is designed for iOS.. http://bluemic.com/spark_digital/

It sounds to me like you want a stereo line in, not a stereo field mic. I've not used either yet, but it looks like Line6 has options for both line-in recording (http://line6.com/sonicport/) and a stereo mic pair (http://line6.com/mobilein/).Edit: It's also probably overkill for a rockman and a DR880, but but there's always the fireface ucx. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb12/articles/fireface-ucx.htm
gorch Posted November 7, 2013 Author Posted November 7, 2013 The idea definitely is a stereo line in for the iPad. Since I'm more and more digging into the iPad the more I want to work with it. Since Steinberg offers a full blown Cubase DAW for iPad I thought to extend the environment to record with it. Though I have the equipment ready for PC or notebook based recording, it would be great to use part of it with the iPad too. So, a stereo line in A/D like the iRig HD would be fantastic.
