Glue for Vinyl Case Covering?

Question

I don't know what it is, but it seems that a lot of the newer TKL cases I have end up having the vinyl start coming off, like the glue failed or something.

Any recommendations on the type of glue to use to put it back on? What kind of surface prep needs to be done?

I've just used normal PVA in the past, i dare say there might be something specifically up to the job out there somewhere.

its messy if you dont prep first but its the best out there...

3M™ Super 77

oh...no prep of the surfaces except no loose material or debris...make sure you cover/mask every thing around the area needing to be attached that you dont want this stupidly sticky adhesive on...follow the can directions and it will never come apart again...oh and have something ready to clean any excess you dont get much error time..and a hard round object to roll wrinkles out as you lay it down...if you take your time to not make a mess-which is the only down side to this stuff...the end product will be bullet proof

bottom line the end result is directly correlated to planning and patients..dont rush the set time.

I googled and some places mentioned water soluble contact cement?

The super 77 looks nice but getting it into the area needed would be tough, as it's mostly the edges. Not sure how I would spray it on there without making a big mess and getting my hand attached to a guitar case.

I use the 3m sprays for shipping boxes, etc. Great stuff.

for lil hard to get areas, nothing like good ole contact cement.

(basically what the 3m sprays are)

the spray is directional flat fan...works great in tough areas..again using the roller works good to push in

For small spots, use 3M Super 77, using the precautions that gearwhore mentioned, BUT...

Spray a small amount on a piece of paper/cardboard/whatever and use a q-tip or toothpick, depending on the size of the area you're working on and daub it in there. You'll need to do this in small doses as the stuff sets up pretty quickly but takes a while to get fully sticky. I did this with great results on a Music Man cab that was dinged and nicked all over the place.

a kabob skewer works really good to.

I have alway used regular, white Elmer's Glue. I use enough to let some squeeze out when I hold the vinyl flap down with my fingers. Excess glue doesn't really matter because Elmer's dries clear. I then use a piece of masking tape to hold it shut. After 2-3 days I carefully peel off the masking tape and it holds forever.
