Pieman Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 My daughter has asked me about ukes, I had a cheapo ($50) years ago, and it went bye-bye after nobody played it.Any thoughts on size, price to pay for something decent, etc.?Thank you in advance.
Montelovesco Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 Had a real cheap one and a Ovation/Applause which I would consider as mid-price. Liked the later one very much. Avoid any cheap crap. They loose the tuning every five seconds and that is a fun killer...
ptm1diver Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 Check out the Kamaka Ukulele. Some say its the one that all others are judged by.
tbonesullivan Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 I picked up a cheapy, I think a Lanakai tenor size. Just the basic one. THey come with nylagut strings, which are actually really good strings.I would say if you play the hell out of the cheapy one, then go for the expensive one. Also definitely check out this website: www.ukulelehunt.com . They used to have the domain www.ukehunt.com but I think that was not exactly a good name.
Feynman Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 Soprano size is the most common, and there are some really good options at any budget level. My wife has a Chinese Ohana model, and the quality and woods are really nice. I think it was about $150. If you buy from a good uke dealer (the ukulele hunt site has some solid recommendations), they will do a good setup before they send it to you. As with guitars, some of the brands all come from the same factories, but not all. Even some of the $50-60 ones are surprisingly nice. Obviously, as with any hobby, you can spend tons of money if you want to.Ukulele shipping charges are so cute compared to guitars.
