petel Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 just had my 1980 special refretted and the high e buzzes unless i raise saddle higher then i want. will it just take time for guitar to settle in ?
carfish7 Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 Sounds like it needs further massaging. I don't know that one should get a guitar refretted and have to "wait for it to settle in" but someone wiser than me will likely chime in soon.
DBraz Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 Agree with carfish7. As soon as you get it back it should be bang-on.
Sugartune Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 Agreed. Shouldn't have that issue if it was a complete fret job.
G Man Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 Has there been a very large swing in humidity at your locale since receiving the guitar back? If so, it could just need a truss rod tweak.
petel Posted October 17, 2014 Author Posted October 17, 2014 yes. weather has gone back and forth. didnt think of that.
Uncle Thor's Hamer Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 Where does the buzz happen? Only when played open, or do you hear it at certain frets but not others?A refret should include getting the frets all level with each other. It is possible one fret popped a bit loose at one end after the job was completed. You might even be able to see the high end if you carefully examine it.Buzzing when open but not when played on the first fret would indicate the nut slots are too low (or the first fret is too high and is not level with the rest of the frets). If you did not have a new nut installed it is possible the old nut was adjusted in the past down to the worn frets and is now too low. Or the old nut is just worn too far. If you did have a new nut installed, it could be it was cut too low (easy to do) or the slot is not cut properly. Grab the string at about the first fret and look at where it goes through the nut. Move the string around and see if you can see it wobbling in the nut slot. It shouldn't move at all inside the slot.
