Sugartune Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 Pickups are fun!I've been rocking my '05 Studio Custom completely stock since '05 until recently. I did like the Duncan 59s in there, but I wondered what something else might sound like.As of yesterday, the 59s are out in favour of Sheptones. A long awaited Brian Kahanek Signature PAF (ordered July 27th, arrived November 27th) in the bridge and a HB sized p90.HOLY F**K!It's the perfect combo! As annoying as the wait was, it was worth it. Though it kinda makes me wish I had it earlier. The wait was mostly anticipated, it kept extending due to some completely understandable family and personal situations that took him away from his work. I picked up a Special this summer that had the HB p90s and loved them, so immediately ordered an HB for the Studio. The 59s are now in that Special (which, to me are actually better fit for that guitar) and the bridge p90 will sit until something worthy of it's presence comes into play.If you rock a p90 bridge, what's a good HB to pair with it? Just as a reference, knowing personal preference and the guitar itself will vary that assessment.Anyway, I highly recommend Sheptone! (No affiliation). He's currently going through a bit of a revamp, website, offerings, but still worth checking out in the meantime.http://sheptone.com/newsite.htmlA soldering iron used to scare me. Not anymore!
atomicwash Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 What a great feeling when you find perfect tone. Great review!
Sugartune Posted November 28, 2014 Author Posted November 28, 2014 It is great! Thank you! If this does become a habit, I will be sticking to Sheptones. As for a specific tone report, it'd just be filled with unquantifiable adjectives. Simply put, I really like them! The PAF, I liked much better than the Antiquity PAF a friend has in his Les Paul. The p90 is the best I've played or heard, by far.Of course everyone has their preferences, but these are certainly worth giving a look.
atomicwash Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 I had my HOLY F*CK moment with a Godwood in the bridge.
sonny o'hoolighan Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 I've loved the Wolfetone and WCR sets I've installed in my guitars.
Sugartune Posted November 28, 2014 Author Posted November 28, 2014 I've read a lot abot WCRs, Wolfetone, Rio Grande but haven't experienced them. I'm sure I'd like em too, based on the praise chorus.Someday I'm sure I'll end up with some of the above in a guitar from someone on the board. I look forward to it.
Hackubus Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 I had my HOLY F*CK moment with a Godwood in the bridge.I had one when I put Fillmores in my R8 way back when. That was the first for me after a bunch of pickup swaps thru the years.
Sugartune Posted November 28, 2014 Author Posted November 28, 2014 Fillmores? There's another one. I guess there's a whole load out there. There's a local dude for me too, The Pickup Wizard. Apparently he is just that. But I suppose just like guitar brands and makes, the list could be endless. Can't try 'em all, as much as we try to try.
