diablo175 Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 On maple/maple boarded necks, if the back is gun oil finished is the board typically the same? Can you have the board clear finished and the back of the neck gun oil?
it's me HHB Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 I finished several Allparts necks almost like that. Did the music man try oil on actual neck and lacquer on front of headstock, just taped it off. I can't imagine a real builder not being able to. They might not want to and give a huge upcharge but its totally possible. Try oil is so easy you could get a normal finish neck then just sand the back and try oil as easy as anything
tbonesullivan Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 If you are talking about the ernie ball necks, they finish the fretboard the same as the rest of the neck. Do note however that the headstock is always finished, either matching gloss poly, or satin poly, so you don't have to do anything north of the nut.The necks are rubbed with birchwood casey tru-oil, which is then wiped off after 5 minutes. after that dries, they then put on a few coats of birchwood casey gunstock wax.For cleaning, lemon oil or wonder wipes works best. For a more thorough cleaning, murphy's oil soap a bit diluted with water will help, and strip off old wax. you would then have to re-wax.If it's REALLY grungy, then you'll probably have to go at it with a 1:1 mixture of murphy's and a soft toothbrush.
Armitage Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 I've used tru-oil on a bunch of guitar necks, and as long as I leave it a few days to dry... I'm happy.
it's me HHB Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 I believe they buff out the try oil application at Ernie ball. I know I do
