HELP! Does anyone make nickel six in a line double ring vintage style Klusons?

The Shark

Question

Posted

I want vintage style double ring Klusons in nickel for my upcoming Shishkov Ultimate. Mike's all for it, but I can't find a set that's six in line. It looks like I'm going to have to buy two sets to accomplish my goal. And that's stupid!

Anyone?

I don't know what double ring means, but would AllParts which may not be on backorder. How's this? Maybe Gotoh vintage style with aged tulip buttons?

Those are similar to what he is looking for, but those are SINGLE ring, like these:

He is looking for these, but in a 6-in-line set:

I don't know of anybody who makes those in a 6-in-line format.

FWIW, the original '50s Explorers DID use a single ring button when fitted with the old style Klusons like these.

Yes. I think that's the rub. I just worked my way through the vintage tuner section of the Kluson catalog. Obviously Kluson made buttloads of tuner button configurations for Fender and Gibson. Kluson made lots of 3+3 keystone button tuner sets with double rings for many of Gibson's 3+3 headstocks. But when it came to a 6 in line keystone set, the only recipient was the Explorer, and that model had a single ring as you already know. So since the Kluson look these days is for vintage restoration (whether by Kluson, Gotoh, Grover, or a house brand), they're recreating a look, and the keystone button double ring inline 6 never existed, so there's no demand (other than The Shark) for a modern set.

If it's any comfort, when you consider the total cost of a custom order, buying two sets of tuners instead of one to get the look and features you want is a pretty minor expenditure.

Not to mention when you consider what Mike charged for the guitars in the Ultimate run v. regular pricing or what you could get a comparable instrument for out there, this shouldn't even be a complaint!
