Metallic Paint where to buy?

Carl.B

Question

Posted

I am doing a DIY refinish on Korean Hamer Eclipse and would like to put a metallic finish on it. I would like to either do metallic black, royal or navy blue, or a darker purple depending on what I can find. It could be pre-mixed as I do have a sprayer or spray can {not my first choice}.

My homemade spray booth should be completed this weekend then one more round of finish sanding and it should be ready to start. So if anyone has any tips, tricks, comments please feel free to chime in.

Thanks

Carl B.

Reranch has lots of great paint.

I have painted guitars with acrylic lacquer from an automotive paint shop.  Turned out beautiful and acrylic lacquer is extremely forgiving for novice shooters (me, not you, necessarily).  I realize some TGP purists might scoff at acrylic lacquer, but it's pretty tough, can be buffed and like I said (typed), extremely forgiving.  If you get a run or sag, it dries so quickly you can sand and reshoot a spot in very little time.

All that said, whatever Stike says - do that!

ETA: a link to the Reranch color page. I enjoy reading the history of each color (where included).

I just finished using spray cans from this company to finish a replacement door blade for my old Audi.  Almost unlimited selection of automotive colors, including metallics.  Easy to use, comprehensive instructions.

Pro auto paint shops are a good bet if you have one local.  They'll sell by the quart or charge up rattle cans for you, and the cans are (usually) better quality than what get at, say, Autozone.

A friend of mine used Duplicolor cans from Autozone, and the paint delivery really sucked (sputtering, etc...). It was a metallic, which made things even worse - lots of do-overs involved (might not be as bad with non-metallic, since you could wet sand out the imperfections)

I've had great results with ReRanch (rattle cans):

I totally forgot about Reranch thanks for the reminder. I am by no means a expert my experience includes some lawn furniture, bicycle frames

If you have spray equipment (i.e., compressor, water trap, gun, booth, etc.) you'll get much better / controllable delivery (results) not to mention, the amount of actual pigment in a rattle can is incredibly small per $ compared to buying mixed paint.

But again, do what Stike says!

ETA: Chromium, that bass looks fantastic!

Chromium: What color is that, Ocean Turquoise?

Yes - Ocean Turquoise.

I had wanted to do this one in a yellowed Pelham Blue... and this seemed to get in the ballpark without the additional hassle of spraying a tinted clear.  (it was also done before ReRanch had started offering Pelham Blue).
