sirDaniel Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 anyone have an old hi-8 they're not using?I have 5 tapes that have to be digitized. My old camera is quite dead and destrpyed. I pay cash.
kenjones Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 I had a BUNCH of Hi8 tapes when our Hi8 camera died. I had moved over to MiniDV in the meantime. I asked around and finally found a friend that had a Digital8 camera. He let me borrow it for a few days and I transferred all my footage over Firewire from the Digital8 to MiniDV tape. This allows me to still have access to all of that footage and I didn't have to digitize it. You might be able to rent a Digitial8 camera from a local camera store that rents camcorders.
serial Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 Mine died too. Weird-in the middle of taping a gig (too bad-it was the last show we did at a rather large venue and I missed the part where we dragged BroChris up to play w/us). I recall looking on eBay for a replacement and they were dirt cheap, but I was skittish about getting another one that didn't work. Since moved on to the MiniDV-much better format in all respects.
Jimbilly Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 Pawn shops are full of those, I saw a nice looking Canon the other day for $79. The battery is going to be the weak point is buying a used one.
Jamie K Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 I dropped some big bucks (for me anyway) in the early 90's on a Sony 8 camera and a Hi-Fi VCR - first baby on the way, capture the moments, etc. The VCR went south two different times and it was $85 each time for the "standard repair" charge. Then the camera went bad (no playback, a recurring theme apparently). I still haven't gotten around to transferring everything from 8mm to digi.Changed my thinking about Sony stuff...haven't bought any of their products since (although their HD TV's look pretty schweet!). YMMV.Jamie
sirDaniel Posted March 17, 2006 Author Posted March 17, 2006 I have a new DV. I need a hi-8. thought I'de ask here.I know I can score one on the bay.
Jimbilly Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 My Samsung hi-8 has been very durable, consider those as well.
Rockola Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 Mine's been flakey for over a year and the lamp is burned out. It was one of the last MIJ Sonys and you would think I would last at least 4 years without self destructing. We're talking about less than moderate use, too. No skydiving here, just Kids and Christmas....regular chitYet, you spend (at the time)a big chunk knowing the format will change. Get suckered into bigger batteries because the stock battery would last as long as a cold beer in August and it's proprietary. It's a sore spot with me so I cannot recommend Sony.I'm currently setting up a dvd recorder to convert the tapes and wondering if I should stick with the format with cheapy ebay finds or go digital.Sorry for the hijack.S.
tomteriffic Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 Just checked ours, hasn't been used in 10 years. Unfortunately it's a regular 8, not Hi-8.
Rockola Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 SirDan, If you're not in a hurry (im stressing this) and the content is not...ahem, private I might be able to convert them. I should have my dvdr sorted out soon and I want to convert my own Hi-8 tapes. Just furnish the media. I just opened the box Wednesday and I'm not yet into the manual.
jerseydrew Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 I have a Hi-8 Sony. I've been thinking about upgrading my camcorder for many years but I don't use it enough. Just curious, what's it worth?
