rickrock999 Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 If I had not just bought a guitar today..... This wont' last. Hamer Chaparral Elite 1990 Sunburst | Reverb
Jon C Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 This very nice Chap and a flame maple Cali are both for sale this week on Reverb that look great....but both have repaired headstocks. The Achilles heel for these thoroughbreds. Someone with a couple of extra Hamer necks with boomers could give them some love.
Dave Scepter Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 Cool guitar but waaaaay too much for a broken/repaired neck... looks like was a very bad break and that's got to be the most awkward/ugliest nut I've ever seen... yeesh!, might as well just weld 3 Allen wrenches to the nut clamp screws... and what's up with installing a battery access door to the control plate?.. What's it for and how often do you have to change the battery?.. and even then, just 3 screws!

Jon C Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 Looks like the flamed Cali with the broken headstock sold, as well. Not listed on Reverb or Ebay anymore. Someone must have had some extra necks! I did a mental exercise to determine how much I would be willing to spend on a Hamer with a repaired neck. Got down to $1000 and still probably wouldn't do it. I would actually rather buy one with a broken headstock that HAS NOT been repaired so I could guarantee a first rate repair. Without that; its a roll of the dice.
rickrock999 Posted July 9, 2023 Author Posted July 9, 2023 The flamed Cali is not on the sold list. Either the guy pulled it or sold it locally. On another note while looking at the sold listing page, someone sold a Newport 12 Birdseye maple for $3500 and it only was up for 3 days. I sold the last one for $2275, and it took a week. (Still made a nice profit) OUCH!, it just goes to show you only need one person with money and desire.
jujisque Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 Seems I may be of a different mind than y'all about the headstock and condition of that Cali ... because I'm the guy who bought it. Not through Reverb, but directly. From my point of view, the price I paid reflected the condition and the fact of the repaired headstock compared to the sales we've seen in the last year. I've been closely following sales of Californians for a bit and I got this one for at least the amount less than normal sales prices that a headstock repair would cost. Granted that doesn't magically make it into a Californian with no headstock break, but this one checked all the boxes for me (aztec gold, solid flame maple, bound neck, boomers, etc.) so I jumped on it. If I ultimately sell it and sell it for less than I paid, then that will just be the cost of my joy at having scratched the itch to get exactly the Cali that I have wanted for nearly 20 years. I definitely may hate the guitar, lol, but at least then I'll know. Thankfully I'm now in a position where a few hundred bucks won't break me

Congrats but am I missing something?.. which Cali are we talking about?

That worked out because the unknowns were all things I could either live with or fix. I guess I am comfortable that I can adequately fix anything on a guitar except a broken headstock....my limitation. Enjoy your new guitar.
