Craigslist Stuff... Ever Wonder If It's Stolen?

Have you ever passed on Craigslist stuff because you suspected it might be stolen?

The price is crazy low, or the seller doesn't know anything about it or won't say how they got it, or "I'm selling it for a friend".

What if you buy something and it turns out to be stolen?

I actually haven't bought anything from CL, but I look all the time. Lots of college kids selling stuff here.

There was a Hamer on ebay once that I asked about, and the guy said it "basically was given to him by a friend". I interpreted that as "stolen".

If something is obviously stolen, don't buy it and report the seller.

If you do buy something and then someone comes to you and says "thats my gear and yes it was stolen, here's the police report, etc" then I think you should offer them the piece for the price you paid exactly.

If they are mad about having to pay, tell them to be mad at the thief, not you. You should not of course, try to make money on the stolen gear and if you are feeling flush, you could even split the loss with the original owner or something, thats your call.

If you buy something that has been stolen, you have to give it back to the owner since the person who stole it couldn't pass title or ownership rights to anyone. Your recourse is against the person who sold it to you, so be sure to get as much info as possible on the seller just in case...

I bought a guitar from Guitar Center once that turned out to be stolen and got my money back because they didn't do the proper checks/clearances on the guitar when it came in. The guitars original owner inquired about it here and I was able to get it back to him. A rare custom ordered-guitar that his fiancée now wife had ordered for him as a wedding present. I was lucky that it was a GC screwup or id have been hosed.

In Minnesota, the rightful owner of stolen property must report the theft to the police and document ownership to them at that time. The police then typically locate and sieze the property, take a report on the seller, and pursue things from there. I would never get involved with someone claiming to be the rightful owner of property as there are too many scam artists out there.

Steve is 150% right about gathering as much info on the seller as possible. It's your responsibility to go after the seller if you bought stolen property. In many cases the police won't do much about it beyond returning the property to its rightful owner.
