The First Tone That Made You Say... "Whoa!"

+1 I read that Lennon was very proud of the fact that he was the first artist to record feedback at the beginning of a song. -
The First Tone That Made You Say... "Whoa!"

Al DiMeola's Elegant Gypsy. I've experienced simulated levitation while playing along with it. Angus' lead on Shook Me All Night Long. I think Angus gets too much credit for their tone, whereas Malcom plays hollow body with 13 gauge strings. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_in_Black Hey Joe on Hendrix's Live at Monterey. Very underrated album. Turned music on it's head. Skynyrd T for Texas One More From the Road. Neil Young Southern Man. Pushes a 30 W Fender to the max. Clapton's Just One Night. Bob Dylan Live at Budakon. Music produced during the 70's. Call me old school. I did not appreciate Metallica till I received a free ticket to drive to the Black Album concert. -
I don't care for/against trolls. If they are trying to stir up a thread for an intellectual debate that's fine. Some people are soft shelled and it is entertaining to see others get offended. But if a troll has low and destructive self-esteem; and can't articulate any arguement but make a single inflamatory statement without any facts, then their lame-o. Poor souls who aren't able to date on Friday nights and need Mommy's help when the bills don't get paid.

I have a 74 Tele Deluxe. It could be 72. I haven't played it in a few years. The Humbuckers are probably improving with age. My guitar was played in a opening act for Blackfoot. I don't have anything to substantiate, but it makes for something of an OK story. It is obviously CBS. Would that be considered vintage???? Over 25 years would be the cut-off, I would imagine. If a guitar is a part of rock history, then there shouldn't be any question to its value. But if it's been kept in Joe Blow's closet for years, I don't see how an astronomical price would equate to its value??

My last thread said that feedback was an issue. That can't be the case because Uncle Ted with his 355 and Malcom Young with Gretch hollowbody can't both be wrong???? Talk about loud. The 335 is so big that an average size quitarist looks tiny. So they opt for the LP. LP is so status quo it amazes me. I know if I had one, I'd probably be singing a different tune. When was the last time an artist smashed an LP on stage????? Townsend during the 70's ?
-
As much as a genius Alex Lifeson was during the earlier stages of Rush, his career has gone down the tubes. Can we hear a classic with 335???? How can one walk away from the sound of 2112? Working Man, etc... He set himself up as a rock standard with 335 and Marshall stack. Then he went commercial. He went from Rock God to sell out slob. http://cgi.ebay.com/Gibson-Eric-Clapton-ES...1QQcmdZViewItem 12 K guitar. 1 offer.

For the past several years my Shredder has been my go to guitar. Then recently I purchased an import 335, not thinking I would be too crazy about it. Now that is my "go to" guitar. I like playing acoustic, but I prefer the sound of a PAF. So its a combination of the two. Took me years to figure it out.....I just assumed that Clapton, Lifeson, Fogerty all put down their 335s, then the guitar must be somewhat no longer status quo. I feel that if you aren't strumming like a fool, then your just borrowing time. I swore I would never find a reason to put down the Shredder. Why did they put down their 335s?? It insults my intelligence because if you recorded with it, then why not at least play it on stage for one particular song? I am a dork. I have no clue to where this post started to where it is going....It beats starting another useless thread I guess.

I was afraid to call it a Jr. That is where I get confused....I've got literature on it, but if I recall first the Jr. was released that looked like what the Hamer Special looks like, then the LP style Jr. I wonder if Urban plays it for its sound; or is it just good marketing playing something a little different? It seems like Urban is trying to please everyone by having so many guitarists. It's not like he's playing Lynyrd Skynyrd. I realize this is probably the 1000th thread comparing Hamer to LPs.
-
My bad for not clarifying the LP Jr. Don't really see that guitar around too often with marquee names. I like what Keith Urban is doing with the LP model. His performance on SNL last night was short of amazing. He is probably the next Springsteen. I'm no big fan....but I watched SRV at Austin this week and his performance after he cleaned up was kinda short of his first performance; when he was "using", but he appeared much happier. I doubt if Urban has 1/2 the problems SRV did.

I bought a 81 Hamer Special in 1987 due to the fact that word of mouth claimed it was better than the famous Gibby LP. I was living in Army barracks at the time, and I sensed owning a LP would bring criminals out of the woodwork wanting to steal it, so I felt safer with Hamer. I played this guitar for 2 decades now. I don't own a LP, and haven't played one in recent memory to recall any comparison. To my knowledge, and I am aware this has been discussed measurably, but I believe the Hamer Special scale is modeled after Fender Stratocaster. If that is the case, the guitar wold be marketed as built like a LP, plays like a Strat. I messed up formatting the poll. It's probably not that important, anyway..... The poll would read 110% 100% 90% 75% etc...
-
I believe EHV ripped a PAF out of a LP for his Frankenstrat. Obviously he preferred one pick-up due to the fact that he didn't have the technical know-how to install a neck pick up. Rarely do I find myself playing neck pickup. Or even middle setting. Does that make me a snob? I have Virtual PAFs that I installed. That could be a whole other thread.
-
Are there any artists out there that makes a Tele sing like him????
-
I apologize. I feel like a major doofus. It was an old pic of EVH with his guitar collection. I put it up for shock value, but it backfired and for the life of me I can't figure how to delete the post.

Did I not play a Hamer on You Really Got Me? Or was it Running with the Devil? The_Guitars_of_Eddie_Van_Halen.htm

? about overdrive/distortion
MTM105 replied to hamerican gigolo's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
any kudos for BOSS Drive Zone? Digital, but nearly perfect. From Tube Scream, KLON, Rat, Electro Harmonix, etc...... Pick and choose from 22 sounds, you should find at least 3 or 4 that suits your needs. From Heavy Metal to Fuzz to virtually the entire spectrum of sounds. same price as a Fulltone nowadays. there is a Fulltone simulation too on it. look into Rocktron Nitro subtle (to not so subtle) compression boost for around $50 if you are playing through humbuckers. -

System for objective evaluation of guitars
MTM105 replied to jdrnd's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
The best guitar is the guitar that is pushed by their cheesy Artist of the Month on the cover of Guitar World.....that's objectivity! -
I forgot to list tonebone. Kinda pricey. Never tried it. Good reviews on Harmony Central.
-
A terribly subjective poll. I have Boss ME 50 multi effects and I find myself tapping into other distortions, rather than actually playing. I had an Ibanez Fat Cat during the 90's and used that exclusively, so I lean towards the Rat sound. But the Guvner is really good also. My apologies if your obivous choice isn't listed.
-
The Peavey Dueces on tour weren't the VT series. The original was Black Widow speakers and 4 6L6 tubes. I've read on Harmony Central that these sound similar to Marshall. It was probably built that way...aka Mississippi Marshall. The VT has an effects loop and mediocre lookng speakers.

Is dookie good or bad?? Definitely Deuces in addition to Maces, concert footage confirms this. Molly Hatchet picked up on the same Swamp tone. Skynyrd probably emulated Duane Allman at first, switching between Marshalls and Fenders. But someone out there I would imagine knows if, and what, distortion pedals were used on One More From the Road. MXR was a staple, but so was EH Muff.
-
IMHO One More From the Road probably capturtes the greatest tone in concert ever recorded. "Redneck Zeppelin" is by default (plane crash) the greatest Rock band originating from the US. Aerosmith is a very close 2nd. I have Skynyrd's Peavey Deuce. I also have a Boss ME 50 which features both Muff and MXR. I am constantly siwtching around trying to figure which distortion was possibly used for that album. Maybe both. Or neither? I emailed Ed King wondering if he could give me some insight, but its been over a year and he hasn't repsonded. I doubt if he will. I live in Nashville and I probably wouldn't recognize him if I bumped into him. I know he didn't play on that particular album. Gimme Back my Bullets has nice tone which was written about/against King.
