Story:

I put up an ISO not too long ago for a Hamer Sign, and was sent a message to my inbox from a new member (03level2) that said that he knew a guy who was selling one for a decent price and sent be an email ([email protected]). I sent him an email with some con nu by. text, and he mentioned a sign, buzt then sent me   c. C6cd  it 6.        a pic of a Diablo LE.

I was like, "uhhhh sick guitar, here's my Diablo."

He then sent me another pic oTV y c   y  f a Californian that was black and kind of similar to the Diablo I sent him a pic of.

I said it looked great and I wish I could have one like it, and he said he was selling it to play some bills.

I told him I couldn't ggafford a guitar like that because I just spe y c7c nt some dough on the nifty black Diablo I had sent g y g6. 6. him a pic of. He asked what I would offer on it. I said I didn't want to offend him, because I could probably do somewhere around $1,000 for my next guitar, but I didn't plan on buying any soon. He said he wild accept $1,100 and I could send $300 first, we would send the guitar, and I could continue to pay him in the next two months. I immediately started to get sketched out, but it was through the HFC community, so I thought it could still be legit.

I asked him how long he had it and he said a long time. I did a reverse image search on Google with the images he sent me and the first thing that popped up were the pics he sent me on a reverb listing that sold last year. It also came up on the Kramer forum in a post for sale from the same time.

I did a reverse image search on the Diablo LE, and that pic was posted on some other forum in 2008.

I told him I was sketched out by that and he assured me he wasn't a scammer, so he sent me his "address and phone number" and I Googled those and the only thing that popped up were people in other forums warning others not to buy anything from them because their scammers under multiple different names.

Needless to say I never sent any money and I told them to find more useful things to do with their time. Be in the lookout for unsolicited messages with new members and Google anything with a reverse image search if your unsure before you send any money out!!

Stay Safe🤘

I've had similar experiences to what you have above with our local Craigslist.  My rule is meet in person, cash in hand.

That's always a good rule of thumb for sure. Too many people out there trying to get a quick buck!

And be careful!!! I had a friend robbed at gun point.
Meet in a public place or even at a local police station. Many stations now have a public room for Craigslist meet ups.

As they said on Hill St. Blues... "Let's be careful out there"

Thanks for the notice and alert. I've had good luck to date, but it's only a matter of time...

I've had overwhelmingly good experiences on craigslist, often hanging around to chat a bit after the deal is over.  Our kids had a teacher who was friends with a family where the dad was murdered over a diamond he was selling on CL (probably 10 years ago now). High dollar stuff would make me nervous, but lower cost stuff is pretty safe, it's probably more dangerous driving to the meetup spot.  I know someone who was robbed a long time ago, the meetup spot was quite sketchy to begin with.

On the topic of dangers of selling guitars and gear in person.

People get robbed selling high value items. I saw these news about criminals robbing car buyers and was thinking that the same situation could happen with guitars and gear.

Guitars are not cheap. You meet someone with thousands of dollars in cash in your pocket or with a guitar worth thousands in your hands and pray that exchange goes well. But there's always a change it doesn't.

My town has a "safe transaction zone" that is 24 / 7 monitored. It's literally the parking lot next to the Police Department. Hopefully more towns have similar ideas.

Just noticed this thread again. Somewhere in a box , after moving a couple of years ago, I have a Hamer banner. I will keep digging around.
