The Super Distortion is a fabulous pickup! I play mainly active EMG’s but I do have an old cream coloured SD that is just sublime in my custom superstrat (Fender Custom Shop copy)…

Duncan will probably make you one, but it won’t be cheap. I’m not sure how the giant pole pieces in an invader contribute to the sound of the pick up, probably a lot. They made me a Metal Fatigue that I installed in my JEL clone. 

Dimarzio really should open a custom shop. Seymour Duncan is getting the lions share of that business. I’ve got a set of super distortions coming in from Dimarzio with a special custom tweak. They’re only making them as a favor to Brawer.

I've never asked for anything special, but when I've written DiMarzio asking about stuff, they've been quick and good with info.  The interactions gave me the impression that they would make something if you asked and just charge you for it, but I don't know.  Maybe they feel they have so many pickups, no need for a custom shop?

They've started making the JB in a rail humbuger... maybe I'll wait and see if they do the same thing with the invader and not have to deal with the custom shot prices... ORRRRRRR since I have a few of them, maybe I can experiment and pull out those giant poll pieces and replace them with something respectable? 🤔

That will certainly cut down the magnetic field a bit. It may also defeat the purpose of that particular, mega-output pickup. I hope you’ll experiment and post your reportings here.

I love to share this old story every now and again...

Around 1972, I saw an ad in Guitar Player magazine for Dimarzio Super Distortion pickups. Really, nobody was making after-market pickups back then. I called and spoke with Larry and asked if I could buy a set. I lived about 30 min away on Long Island and they were on Staten Island, NY. Larry said sure, come on over and pick them up.

So, I get my dad to drive me over there (I was 13 at the time and had a Les Paul Custom) We go over and they were working out of the basement of his Larry's mom's house. They were nobody's back then. My dad asked to use their restroom and Larry says, and I quote: "Oh, its right over there, we just pee in the sink". OMG. True story. hahahaha.

the Super Distortion came with this guitar when I bought it in '02, I don't recall where I got the the currently installed PAF, but I might have bought from someone here. The SD hasn't been in it for a long time, and I've been meaning to re-install it. I have two '80s Ibanez with the V-2 (super distortion clone?) at the bridge, I like those. Has anyone here A/B'd the V2 and the SD?
