Bass Cabinets

So last night I was hangin' at the drummers house drinking beer... His beer, actually.

We got to talking about my bass rig and I told him that I wanted to get a bigger cabinet - maybe a 4x10. He asked if I'd like a 2x15, because he had two of them just taking up space in his studio. We dug them out of the heap and dusted them off; two Acoustic 2x15 bass cabinets loaded with Gauss 5840's. Then he says "If you want them, they're yours"

Since they're free, I think it's probably a good deal, but still, I don't know much about these cabinets. They seem to be made well. Does anybody have experience with either Acoustic or Gauss?

Man, I'd go back over, drink a couple more of his beers and tell him you've been thinking of getting a tube bass amp. Maybe he has a couple of SVTs gathering dust that he was going to throw in the trash. Maybe he'd give you $50 to take them to the dump. The cabinets/speakers were top-shelf stuff back in the day. You definitely should take them and consider yourself a mighty lucky guy.

Sheesh! I'd say you did all right! Those cabs were the shiz in their day, and will still hold up against just about anythong out there today. Those Gauss drivers alone are very sought-after and the cabs were made in the days when Aspen Pittman was on board there.

You can't beat the price. I had a late 70's/early 80's Acoustic bass rig. Solid State with a 2-15" cab. Not a bad sound, but not a reliable amp either. Had this loud, annoying crackle that would come out of nowhere. Never could find the problem. That said, I'd certainly utilize the cabinets.

I'd say it's a score. Acoustic Control Corp. stuff was good. Cetec Gauss was a company owned by MCA that went into the pro audio/MI speaker business in the late 60s. Ed May, one of JBL's best engineers went to work for Cetec Gauss around that time - Ed designed the 4310, L100, LE8, LE15, etc. for JBL.

There used to be a pretty comprehensive unofficial Acoustic site, but it looks like it's gone now, though.

Peace,

WOW! That folded 18 was the original take no prisoners bass cabinet - well, that and the old Sunn 4x15...

I would say you got a great deal. I used 2 Acoustic 370's with the folded 18's starting in 1973 and my brother still uses the amps for his keyboards and the folded 18's on his PA. They used to come with a lifetime warranty when you bought them back then.

I had to use my warranty once when we played out in the sticks and after about 2 hours the generator fried both of my amps.

Acoustic fixed them both for free.
