BCR Greg Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 anyone have an unused 2 fig sus block they'd let loose of ? I have some new sustain block bridges, but they aren't 2FIGs...
peedenmark7 Posted October 3, 2006 Author Posted October 3, 2006 thanks greg, is that wider than the '81 spaced bridges ?the 2 fig is supposedly in between the 2 production periods, and better slightly wider thanthe narrow.actually I'd like to find a NOS wide string spacing '78-80 sus block...but realize thats not gonna happen anytime soon.
serial Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 2FIGs are based on a 1981 Special bridge as far as I recall. They even have a machining "flaw" that was in some of the originals. Both the 2FIGs and the repros that Greg has that another HFCer have are great bridges-I've used both on guitars. Spacing is the same on my examples though.

I have a couple of the recent repros that our fellow hfc'r ran. excellant quality!.. no complaints whatsoever! was just hoping for something with a wider spacing to fill the actual butt width and not have a 3/16ths- 1/4" of dead space on each side of the fingerboard, without having to delete the sus block , and go with a tone pros t.o.m instead. actually have kicked around running the '77-78 bridges..I love that bridge. but dont know that I wanna deal with the hassle and any legalities invloved.
serial Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 I know the bridge PLATE that he used-it was mine. The holes on the back are the "flaw". The original had one hole slightly out of line w/the others-just like in the original. I have the 2FIG on a guitar now and there is no difference that I can tell in spacing-I'll look at it again, but it isn't appreciable if it is different from the standard production ones.
cmatthes Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 The 2FIGs are fantastic bridges. I still fondly remember getting phone calls from a particular HFC'er after he had spent hours in a sub-freezing garage and vintage equipment trying to get those just right. I'm not sure that "Labor of Love" is the correct term for it (at least not one he'd use maybe!), but the attention to detail was fantastic.
edgar_allan_poe Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 but the attention to detail was fantastic. ...and he *loves* buying me beer after ripping me a new one on the board. LOL!!! He is a good dude....even if he does like the color green...ugh. Good dude, but absolutely no taste.
stonge Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 ZZZ... ZZZ... (snort) 'huh? who dares awaken Rip Van 2FIG?' lol.the 2FIG bridges were cut to a string spacing of .385 inches - I measured three different old sustainblock bridges and got three different spacings: .375 spacing = narrow (where the strings pass directly over the polepieces of the original Dimarzios), .400 = wide (where the strings run a bit wide of the polepieces, most noticable on the high and low E), and some other in-between value. The corresponding original saddles measured .375 and .400, and pretty much touched when installed on the matching spacing baseplate. If you put the .375 saddles on the .400 spacing, you get the 'gap-toothed grin' look, and the .400 saddles on the .375 spacing start to angle outwards by the time you get to the E strings. My saddles were .385 to match the spacing, but I have run out of those saddles (they were machines out of bar stock one at a f-ing time. mrs stonge learned to run the Bridgeport and helped out, and even she couldn't believe how much of a pain in the arse those saddles were). It is a pretty subtle difference - add the width of a high E onto the saddle and that's real hard to see even if you have good eyes (and I don't). I am out of bridges at this point, and the tooling got misplaced during the transition to Casa des Stonge so I can't imagine making any more. Personally, I think .400 spacing and saddles would be kinda nice, so it might not be a bad project for somebody better equipped to handle it. Everything I did was accomplished with a bandsaw, $80 drill press from Home Despot, and a 1950's Bridgeport that ran off 110V (it was a four-digit Bridgeport, but I couldn't get Peter to buy it from me lol). A good friend described it as 'a hunk of brass, and old Bridgeport, and a wet dream'. On the good side, I learned how to light a propance heater the right way (and there IS a wrong way! Don't ask).Looking at the Hamerhead bridge, I'd guess it's .385 spacing with .375 saddles from the very minor gaps between the saddles. Those bridges were better made and more consistant than the original sustainblocks, and I have never been shy to praise the quality of the craftsmanship. There were several witnesses who saw me pick one up and examine it in a HFC hotel room many moons ago, and I think they are still laughing at the shock on my face. They are that good, and I should've bought one or two for myself lol.The plating house buffed out most of the chatter marks before plating; I f'ed up the drill jig and the drill jig bushing for one string was about .030 low. Of course, I discovered it after drilling all 18 bridges in the batch. Like serial sez, I picked up an original and noticed that that one was pooched the exact same way. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.***edited because it's Home Despot, not Hope Despot and I forgot to offer Poe another beer. Skinny bastage is up to a 1/4 barrel by now lol***
Guest Meshuggah Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 I've had the skinnier and the wider spacing SBs in my hands at the same time and I got give the nod to the wider one's, but I'm a big fat feller and have fingers to match (my nostrils look like I'm a coacine addict)
serial Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 There's something cool (to me) about having these bridges made by HFCers on Hamers I play regularly. Hmmm, maybe I'm shoulda be bringin' one out this weekend...
