I watched a Blues band last weekend and the lead guitar player had great tone, varied from Santana crying to Southern rock sound. So on the break I went over and talked to him. He had a Schecter PRS looking guitar and a Black box with a tube in that just said REAL TUBE on it going into an old Peavey. Does anyone have experience or know anything about this pedal? I think it may be a Chandler or like one. It sounded great like an old LP that isn't too bright.

I have the Maxon (real tube over drive) ROD-881. It is simply the best overdrive/distortion/boost pedal I have ever used. It cost me $275 and it is worth it. It can do anything from simple clean boost to full on metal tones and everything, and yes I mean everything, in between. It turns my '64 Fender Deluxe blues voiced amp into a raging Marshall stack.

I tried one...they run the tube too cold. The new breed of tube overdrives that actually work do it at 300mv. When I tried one through my GA-15RV all I got was Muuuhhhd.

That sounds cool. The one this guy was using was from the eighties and has a tube in it. A big ugly black box with white writing that said REAL TUBE. I have a Bad Monkey and a Aramat effects Green Machine, the Green Machine does a good Marshall sound but not as big and Fat as this was. It was a very natural big sound. Of course the Schecter might have been some of the reason. I am not familiar with those. It looked like a PRS kinda shape with humbuckers. He was using an old Peavey 2x12 black tube combo that was miked. This band was great and the sound was one of the best amateur band live tones that I have ever heard. It's nice to see an inexpensive setup that sounds good.

I had one of the blue ones, but a friend really needed it! I now have one of the early cream colored large ones (the chandler BK Butler one like eric johnson uses). Those are very cool!, and Peso does know all about them. I understand that tube choice is very important.

I have a Hot Chili Tubester that runs a 12AY7. Has lots of controls and sounds awesome. I used it with a Deluxe Reverb to control volume levels and still get good fat OD. I don't use it now with the Two Rock, but I'll never give it up.

Hey BD,

I worked for Tube Works from 89- early 98 as the tech Mgr...

You can find these in Pawn shops pretty cheap... keep an eye out... best years are pre 97 ...... hand made in Denver CO... Aviod any of the newer versions... trust me.... Tubes make a HUGE difference in the tone... they do not like Sovtek tubes.... NOS US, Yugo or even Chinese tubes work well....

If you have any questios feel free to e-mail me off board... pesocaster at hotmail dot com

I am very new to tubes. The first tube anything I've owned I got about a month ago. It's a Rocktron Silver Dragon stompbox. I've really enjoyed it. I'm pretty sure that it has a cheap tube in it, but it was only $90 and it has two gain channels. How would the sound of my Silver Dragon compare to one of the older Tube Works?

Here's another question: People are always talking about how great power tube saturation type distortion is, but all of the tube distortion pedals I've seen have preamp tubes rather than power tubes. Is there a pedal out there that uses power tubes?

Ibanez Tube King, I sold one and hate myself ever since for selling that one, awsome tone and quality. jack.

talk to TG. He might still have one laying around (don't remember if he sold it). It was missing the power cord.

I have one of the early Chandler Tube Driver (San Fran) rackmounts. I'm pretty happy with it. I use a 12AU7.
