WTB Sunburst B/C 77-79

I prefer a -79 to complement my -79 Standard, but any cool B/C Sunburst will be considered. If you have a custom made Studio Custom (perhaps chambered) it would be interesting to.

At this point, I suspect you can get a new B&C Sunburst w/ sustain block custom made to your specs for around the same price as an "unboogered" '79.

The early ones are stupid rare and those that have them seldom let them go. In the past 5 years, I've seen maybe 6 pop up on eBay. I don't recall any in the last couple of years, but I havent been watching that closely. I know of a handfull of buyers that have been attempting to locate a good original '78 or '79 for many years without success. I wouldn't be suprised to see an average condition one in sunburst go for over $2K, natural or cherry would be worth more.

I paid slightly more than that to have this one built:

Cool looking guit.

That green one is extremely cool, (and I don't even like green guitars :) ).

The only downside to having a new one built is that it will come with Duncan's, and not the original Hamer/Dimarzio's which I really love. Also I guess it will be a real maple top, and not the thin veneer? That will probably make it sound a little brighter? Or not? BadgerDave, give us a tone report. I wonder if they would do a really thin one piece maple top that would look like the old ones?

You are correct about the stock Duncans, though I think Hamer would use '59s if you asked. Those are very close to the old DiMarzio models and, IMO, the bridge pickup sounds better. I always thought the Hamer/DiMarzios sounded a bit thin in the bridge position. Mine has a set of Gregwind VooDoos that were installed immediately on delivery to my friendly dealer.

Hamer is using a thicker slab of maple for the tops on new orders. I suspect it has some impact on the tone of the guitar, but mine is not a particularly bright sounding. In fact, compared to the '80 - '83 Sunbursts I've owned, the new one has a thicker midrange tone, more bottom and a little less "zing" in the uppper registers. I hesitate to say it, but it's very "Les Paulish". It is also the lightest Sunburst I've owned and has a nice chunky "vintage carve" neck.

You might have hesitated, but I'm glad you said it.

I love the look of that greenie.

Well, I didn't hesitate for long. :)

Thanks for the compliment. The green Special is a remarkable guitar. Thanks to some great input and stewardship by Mr. Platzer, the usual artistry of the guys at the factory, and a simply amazing piece of dark amber flame maple that caught my eye at the '03 factory tour, it turned out even better than I expected. It is "the one" that I will never part with.
