RICARDOROOSTER Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Hi, this is my first post so forgive any errors or protocol breaches. I'm looking to acquire a pre-owned Standard Custom Flametop for a reasonable price in the UK where this beast is very hard to find. Any assistance or guidance that anybody can give would be gratefully received. What might I have to pay? I can't consider a purchase from USA as I'd want to play it first and import taxes will add about 20 per cent to the cost. I might consider a PX with my 1997 cherry Gibson ES135 with Fralin p90s. I would also welcome any observations from members who gig this guitar regarding playability, user friendliness (I've heard that they're an awesome weight) and range of sounds would be welcome. I'm a regular working musician playing mostly R and B. I love just sitting down in a comfy chair and playing unplugged, does the shape of this guitar allow that? Thanks for any help or comments.
Jeff R Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 I love just sitting down in a comfy chair and playing unplugged, does the shape of this guitar allow that? Don't let the body shape fool you - a Standard Custom is probably one of the most comfortable sitting-down guitars you'll ever play, it balances perfectly on your knee. As for unplugged, they are typically lightweight for their size and quite resonant. Very balanced sounding.
zorrow Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 They actually are GREAT axes. My only complain is that for some reason I cannot easily reach the higher frets on them. My left forearm always tends to collide with the lower point, so I adopt pretty weird positions when playing Explorers or Standards. But that's only me. So far I know of no other player complaining about that. And that's a shame they are not for me, because the ones I have tried do sound and play AMAZING -- and let me tell you something more about them, just in the case you be interested: their shape is a total hook for women. My wife almost cried when I sold my Explorer!

Yes, definitely go for the one in the UK. These are hard to find here in Europe, and even if it is a few hours travelling time for you to try that one out it will be worth it. Looks nice too. And welcome to the board!

Helps prevent me from trying to much....
