Vector and Standard Custom Review

First, I had real issues with the "football" (or whatever they call it) input jack on the black Standard Custom -- the 1/4" plug on my wireless cord just doesn't fit tight in it, causing my signal to short out all night long. Is this common and is there a quick fix??? I don't have that issue with any other guitar, including the Vector so what gives?

Ok, the Standard Custom. What a killer sounding guitar -- beefy, balls galore and the neck VooDoo pickup is one of the most sweet sounding I think I've heard...great cleans and under gain, it just sings like no tomorrow. I'm not so thrilled with the bridge pickup but I'm not giving up on it yet. Like the VooDoos I had before, they squeal like crazy under high gain. It's a quick fix with my Decimator pedal but it's annoying as hell. Regardless, the guitar itself is a monster.

Next: the korina Vector. Man, was I totally surprised about how good this guitar sounds and plays. I mean totally caught off guard! Playing at home through a shitty combo amp makes it kinda hard to hear the nuances in a given guitar. But as soon as I plugged that thing in and we kicked in a tune, I was smiling ear to ear, truly. It cuts through like no other axe I own and I was stunned how good the stock 59 pickups sound. And that's one thing that makes me question the VooDoos in the Standard Custom, because they just didn't have the "grind" or "girth" that the Duncans do. Wierd.

I was also pleasantly surprised to find out how nice the V shape feels playing while standing up and rocking out. That was pretty much my biggest concern, but it felt great. And certainly looks cool as hell.

Both are keepers for sure -- I'm a little frustrated with the Standard Custom's jack issue but hopefully that can be resolved and I'll probably end up installing a WCR pickup in the bridge. But otherwise, Hamers rule.

Finally, the korina Special delivers today. B)

No help with the input jack, but I'll definitely pile on with the 59's. After taking a few days to get used to them in my Studio Custom, I'm very impressed. I've played the 59 neck in a few guitars and always thought it was muddy, but for some reason, the 59 set really works here and the bridge is especially nice; more powerful than I would have expected given the resistance reading.

It's technically an output jack.

I think the problem is probably with the configuration of your wireless plug. If it is a large diameter or if it has a cut-off button underneath, it isn't seating fully into the jack because the jack "plate" is a cup shape.

If that's the case, then just remove the jack from the guitar by removing the two screws, unscrew the jack guts from the round plate. There is a nut between the plate and the jack guts, remove it and put the jack back into the plate. You can possibly put the nut on the outside which will provide a place for your wireless plug to seat flush. Problem solved.

You could also put a switchcraft or other high quality plug of a smaller diameter on the wireless.

Hope this helps you out.

Short out? Or do you mean lose connection?

If you don't want to replace it, there are 2 things you can do. If it is really loose, remove the football plate which will give you access to the jack. Very carefully bend in the leg that rides the plug and drops into the cable plug tip just a little. It is easiest to use a pair of needle nose pliers.

Then, get a Q-Tip wet with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol (I use 91%) and insert it into the jack, rotate it and move it in and out. Be sure to clean the complete inside of the barrel part of the jack, and rub along the leg that drops into/touches the cable plug tip. Insert a cable and you will see where the connection is made. If the Q-Tip is black or a little dirty, repeat with a new Q-Tip until it is clean, then use a dry Q-Tip and repeat to dry it. You will notice a tigher fit and a better electrical connection.

I also use a clean cloth/paper towel and alcohol and clean my cable plugs.

It's losing the connection (not shorting out as I said). I'm not sure if I have a "football" jack though -- this one is completely round and there are no screws on the outside of the guitar. It looks like this:

I'm not opposed to replacing the jack if needed but I did take off the control cover last to bend the inside leg but it didn't help. Help!!!

Jaye, I had no problem with the output jack on the Standard. I never even once heard so much as a crackle. A lot of people have trouble with those jacks, but I never have.

Yeah, it's wierd...not sure what's up. I'm curious to what others here have to say because I remember years ago people complaining about that jack on Hamers.

EDIT TO ADD: I seem to remember people back then suggesting Switchcraft plugs...is that really the fix?

Sorry about the misdirection on that... I thought you had a new guitar with the improved output jack.

The old style switchcraft jacks as you have pictured won't work well with metric plugs. In this case you can replace the plug on your wireless with a switchcraft 1/4" plug. The new Hamer output jacks solve this problem and are more compatible with the Chinese and Taiwanese metric plugs.

Awesome...thanks. I have one of the new X2 Digital Wireless systems and the company makes "upgraded" cords with Switchcraft and Neutric plugs so I just ordered one on ebay. Hopefully that will do the trick. Thanks again.

This thread, without pictures that rival your sig, which by the way would make a great poster, is worthless.

Kim will send you a newer style jack for free if you email him.

We have been selling the Xwires for a while, EXCELLENT STUFF.

Cool...I just emailed him, thanks.

Yeah, I'm real impressed with the X2 system and love the simplicity of it. Sounds great too...

Gig pics will come starting mid-February. B)

Jaye:

Cut off the plug on your wireless' cord & solder on a Switchcraft 280 plug.

That's the standardized 1/4" mono plug that will work in every 1/4" jack.

I came across the same problem you are having with 1/4" cables made by Samson, Hosa, & especially Groove Plugs.

Or try the plug off of a Planet Waves with the springs on it . I had issues with a very similar problem until I tried that.

Yeah, my input jack was defective right from day one. Replaced that and the crappy pots right off the bat.
