Buster Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 I have just purchased a guitar that has the ability to split both humbuckers via pulling on both the volume and tone knobs. Currently, the guitar sports what I refer to as Top Hat knobs...that said, I find it really hard to get a good grip on the knob to pull it up to split the coils.Do any of you have a similar setup, and, if so, what kind of knob to you prefer and why?Thanks...Erik
kizanski Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 I've never had a problem with it, but if you do, change to Push/Push pots and use whatever knobs you want.
MCChris Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 I vote for the knurled knobs you typically find on a Tele.
Buster Posted February 1, 2008 Author Posted February 1, 2008 Instal a lever.Wacha talkin' 'bout willis?
DavidE Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 Speed knobs work well for this if you can't grip the tapered knobs.
BadgerDave Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 You can get Strat-style bell knobs that have a rubber coating on the "knurled" part. I used to get them from Stew Mac, but I just checked and they don't have them anymore. Try www.internetmusicsupply.com or www.wdmusic.com.Or, as McChris said, Tele knobs work well.
MCChris Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 Speed knobs work well for this if you can't grip the tapered knobs.A speed knob would work better than a top hat, but I have speed knobs on my PRS that has a pull pot on the tone control for coil splitting. I could get a better grip on a Tele knob for sure.
Guest Meshuggah Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 The push on-push off knobs that come stock on Hubers work really well. I know someone who knows where to get them...
MCChris Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 The push on-push off knobs that come stock on Hubers work really well. The question was about knobs. Sounds like you're talking about pots.

Sounds like you're talking about pots.I introduced the "pots" wildcard, but it's good to see that Badger is consistant in his hideous knob choices.
silentman Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 Instal a lever.Wacha talkin' 'bout willis?Lame attempt at humor. Please move along.
Willie G. Moseley Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 +1 on knurled Tele/P-Bass type knobs. There've been several utility basses I have or had that got such items installed on them. Some basses like original-style G & L SB-1s, SB-2s, L-1000s and L-200os from the early '80s have acceptable original alternatives; ditto the earlier guitars. The knobs on SC series guitars and SB series basses look lame but are serviceable. The bottom line is that something cylindrical with "textured"/serrated sides will be easy to grip.
Guest Meshuggah Posted February 1, 2008 Posted February 1, 2008 I'm in the market. If I can locate, I'll get some of the Huber type for you, if and only if you post another photo that Custom 59 Burst Artist you sold.
