tobereeno Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 what's the story? Although I'm a true bred-to-the-born Ohioan, I've just realized that my life as a musician has occurred entirely outside of my home state (Boston, San Francisco, Seoul). I'm currently nursing a godawful case of homesickness (made worse by the fact that my wife is currently in Toledo, while I, due to f#cking work, couldn't go). I'm currently entertaining fantasies of packing up all my crap and moving back home to Toledo (after fifteen years of big-city life), and I'm wondering - what is the gig scene like for the serious, but not necessarily big-label-chasing, musician? Is there a scene for original bands? what's the skinny on the overall deal?one thing's for sure though, rehearsing would be a lot easier...goddam, I swear I'd pay $100 right now for a Taco Bell meal....
Craig S Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 If you are in Columbus Oh, the original scene is pretty lousy. Classic rock covers is about all you can sell here and forget any interest if there is a ball game on a TV somewhere. I started playing here in the 80's and it's gone downhill pretty steadily. I'm in a original band that's been together for about 9 years and we've hit a crossroads of sorts; we are trying to come up with a cover format we can live with and figure we will play the originals occassionaly and record for our own satisfaction.
tomteriffic Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 The Dayton originals scene is fairly lively, but, as usual, the gigs don't pay for squat. Mostly, though, it's covers. A pretty good number of places to play, though. Hate to tell ya Tobe, but I think they paved Toledo over....

Yeah, I think it's a parking lot for people going to Detroit I'm from Cleveland and it's pretty much the same here; cover bands. There are a few small venues for original bands but as usual, not much $$. If you'd been here this past winter you might not be so anxious ot come back Budman
Caddie Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 Can't get that Pretenders song out my head now......Ay.....oh.......where'dya go Ohioluv that bass line
DavidE Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 I don't know much about the music scene in Toledo, but the city as a whole seems pretty dead. I know Paults plays up there at The Bait Shop from time to time. There are a handful of places for original music in Columbus. Bernies, Oldfields and a few others. Mostly a cover band scene like everywhere else, but lots of places for cover bands to play. Check out cring.com and cowtownmusic.com and maybe columbusmusic.com for info on the Columbus music scene.
JohnnyThunders Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 Well from a musicans standpoint I'm not sure about Cleveland but from a fan standpoint I think it rocks. There are a number of clubs that book new muisc, Grog Shop, Pirates Cove, Agora, Beachland Ballroom, plus a bunch more etc. I could see an interesting band every night of the week if I didn't work and wasn't so old. Not just touring bands but alot of local bands. Small club bands. Cleveland has alwyas had a pretty good underground metal, punk and weird rock scene. You just have to know where to look. Plus there are a number of bigger venues for openers but I don't what anyplace plays. There are also a number of suburban clubs for the cover bands. I lived in Cinci for 2 years and wow absolutely nothing, Columbus also struck me as really bad.

Cleveland has alwyas had a pretty good underground metal, punk and weird rock scene. You just have to know where to look. There were a couple different venues for the hardcore and thrash bands. One of my buddies back home is in Soulless, and they play around Cleveland pretty regularly (last I checked). Grog Shop gets some varied acts in, Billy Morris has a club he runs (catering to the rock crowd), Euclid Tavern (hardcore crowd if it's still open), buncha scattered places throughout the burbs and Akron area too. See if you can get yer hands on a Scene mag (or whatever its competitor is).
JohnnyThunders Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 Go vists you wife in Toledo and stop over and check out Cleveland, I can show you around.
frank_c Posted March 5, 2005 Posted March 5, 2005 the Euclid Tavern's been closed for a while. i hear it may come back though. and the Grog Shop and Peabody's moved, but still running...Scene magazine is nowhere what it used to be, but have a look anyways at www.clevescene.com. the other free weekly alternative rag is the Free Times, www.freetimes.com.
