The Howlin' Hole

So I bought an Artist Custom new in '96. I've played it through lots of amps and I really like the way it sounds through the Fender Tone-Master. It's been my main ax for awhile. Back in January I found a good deal on a Vanguard. I most like to see the wood in my guitars, and of course we've all heard that "painted" guitars sometimes don't resonate well, but when I saw that silver sparkle I had to have the Vanguard. After re-tubing my Marshall JTM60 with JJ's, I plugged in the Vanguard and cranked it. That guitar began to HOWL to the point where I could feel air blowing out the f-hole. The Artist is of course, a different animal all together, and I love it dearly, but that VG....man! Any thoughts on what makes a great sound? Some say an electric guitar only sounds like it's pickups....or that the finish plays a big part...or that "it's in the hands". Okay, in the technique, or the actual physical structure of the hands? What do you think? -Bob-

My old 3-hole Duotone would do that. By covering the different holes with your hand or arm, you could change the way it would feed back.

I miss that guitar.

I've actually been looking for feedback, you know ...controlled and musical, and the VG delivers. I've tried to turn the gain knob way up, I got some pedals...but with this little silver guitar, a George L's .155 cable and the Marshall, I'm feelin' it! Thrilled to death. -Bob-

My 25th blows air out the F hole too. Scared the crap out of me the first time I had it cranked up and it blew air on my arm. Certainly wasn't expecting it.

It's really weird the first time you feel it. My tiny mind can't seem to wrap around why the Artist won't "blow" like that. Maybe the harder maple top? Humbucker's ain't kickin' like the P-90's? Very interesting......

I need a new keyboard, thanks to you. Funny shit (literally, I guess). :)

Mine too. Actually, it didn't catch me off guard when it did that, because I already had (and have) a G&L ASAT Classic Semihollow, and THAT initiated me to arm breeze, and yes, the first time it happened it mildly freaked me out. Then it was like, "Oh, YEAH!"

So it's not limited to single coils vs. humbuckers, covered or uncovered. And if it's related to tone woods, then at least it works with both mahogany and ash (G&L)chambered bodies.

And it can just be SPL (sound pressure level) in the room, because in both cases I got it to happen with my 5-knob (non-master) 20w 1x12 Top Hat just by cranking the volume a bit (it certainly wasn't dimed, but it was in my living room).

Same for me but with my Newport Pro.

Love that guitar!

That's why they call it an "F" hole -- the F stands for "fart."
