Gasp100 Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 This one looks pretty sweet. Nice P90 upgrade as well. Thoughts? I'm not familiar with the Vanguard series at all:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=180326280460
Thundernotes Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Mahogany Artist in silver sparkle. I had the humbucker version and it was a great guitar. Mine had a big beefy neck on it, but I'm not sure if they all had that vintage carve or not.
sw686blue Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 For me, they are the sleepers of Hamer guitars. I'm sure it has a lot to do with the guitar being all mahogany that they sound so good. The price is really good too considering that he upgraded the pickups.
bubs_42 Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 I second the price. I've been watching it wishing it had Humbuckers.. I love 90's and the color too. Good luck it's a Hamer of course it's sounds great !
Gasp100 Posted February 7, 2009 Author Posted February 7, 2009 I'm interested, but I'd have to move some gear I really love... always the same quandry So, I had a 25th Anniversary all Mahogany artist. I'm looking at the Vanguard and a Korina Artist. My problem is that I recall the 25th being VERY neck heavy. That was my only grip on a great, great guitar. Should I expect both of the guitars listed above to be neck heavy as well? Any sure fire way to combat that? I guess I could uninstall Grovers for something lighter and always play with a strap (even sitting down). Thoughts, suggestions?
Thundernotes Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Put pearloid tuner buttons on it.http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Tuner_p...er_Buttons.htmlIt says Schaller, but if you use the original screws, they fit and work just fine on the Grover tuners. (get the larger ones) I put them on my 25th and they look very nice. Bad picture
velorush Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 I'm interested, but I'd have to move some gear I really love... always the same quandry +1 on both interested and on moving gear. I actually offered up my Strat (the pry it from my cold, dead fingers Strat) this week via PM. Really glad the guy found one before we could come to terms - I have obviously got to get a grip! Anybody want to buy a Gibson? [shut up!] No! You shut up! [No! You shut up!] Gibson for sale! [No it isn't!] You're not the boss of me! [it's MY guitar!]...

Alright, who had Feb7th in the Pool? I think he lost it.
mfreyer Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 This one looks pretty sweet. Nice P90 upgrade as well. Thoughts? I'm not familiar with the Vanguard series at all: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=180326280460 The price is about par for the model in good condition. It is probably a good price with the upgraded pickups. Mine has been my #1 for about 7 years, although I put a DiMarzio DLX humbucker in the bridge. The P-90 sounded great, too, but with more of an old-school George Thoroughgood vibe. The semi-hollow body really sings when you get it up to volume. I can feel the air rushing past my arm through the f-hole when I get it cranked. The neck heavy issue has never bothered me, but it is pretty close to balanced; not an immediate neck-dive like some guitars. The neck is fat and fabulous, and the silver finish looks great under stage lights.
Bloozguy Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 With the pickup upgrade, even the BIN price is pretty decent. Mine has a DiMarzio Virtual P-90 in the neck and a DLX-90 in the bridge and they sound great, but I'm probably going to switch it back to P-90s of some sort. I don't like real big necks and this one certainly isn't thin, but it definitely isn't the 50's "baseball bat" size. It's a little neck heavy, but just don't use a slippery nylon strap and it's just fine. Doesn't look like people are racing to bid on it so you can probably snag it for a pretty good price.
