Ethan Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 I have been thinking about replacing the bridge pickup in my SG (sd jb pickup) with a p90 pickup to give it a different sound lately. I plan on bringing my p90 loaded melody maker to practice to see if this is a sound i really want, but i have always liked the way that guitar sounds. basically i want to know the differences in these two pickups if anyone cares to articulate, and for suggestions of any other humbucker sized p90s out there. my main band is kind of an alt-country band, and we are planning on doing kind of a side cover band also to make some $.
Brooks Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 phatcat bridge pup has a little more twang than a regular P90.haven't owed a fat bastard, but i believe they have more mids and gain than the phatcat. several solos on my bands cd (actually, the 2 i like best, tracks 1 & 8) are a mahogany special w/ phatcats (now owned by stokesdead).
santellavision Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 I just bought a set of used PhatCats from Seeker. Put 'em in my '72 LP Custom and they ROCK. Couldn't be happier. Highly recommended.
Ethan Posted February 13, 2009 Author Posted February 13, 2009 i definitely want the twang....hmmm....
Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 There's also the GFS Mean 90 and Dream 90.The Mean 90 is their "true P-90 sounding" humbucker sized P-90.The Dream 90 is, well, in their own words:"Big and full with LOTS of P90 tone, but with a fatter, warmer and yet crunchier body. Thanks to the metal shell they resist hum fairly well, and the sense of string attack and dynamics is flat-out fabulous."I'd suggest you check out Harmony Central's pickup reviews to get more info on these different pups.

discountsounds Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 I'd go with the PhatCat. I had a Newport with a pair of them and it was a great tone when I was playing in an alt.country band.
Bloozguy Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 I've got a Phat Cat bridge pickup sitting at home with nothing to do...I was going to find a neck version and put them in my DuoTone but I put a Rio Fat Bastard/Bastard set in instead. Since you sent me that Grover tuner that I needed last year, I'll return the favor. Email me your address and it's yours. Ray
HamerHokie Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 unreal! thanks man!If you want twang, you'll be happy with the Phat Cats.
specialk Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 +1 to Ray!He's one of the good guys and swaps like that between him and Ethan are just part of the magic of this board.Hope that's what you're looking for Ethan. I've never tried Phat Cats, but I've heard them and dig 'em.sk
