psc3251 Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Guys- there's a studio custom on Ebay with EMG's- lovely looking guitar- anybody know anything about the fact that the description says that the EMG's were factory? Anyway, I'm looking for a Studio or Sunburst so I'm keen on this one......anybody know anything about it? Says it's a Monaco too- don't think so...... http://cgi.ebay.com/HAMER-MONACO-STUDIO-CU...1QQcmdZViewItem Cheers
atquinn Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 If you don't buy it, I will! The seller doesn't seem to know much about the guitar (for instance, they weren't sure the fretboard was ebony (it is btw)), but they are great. I asked them for closeup pics of the control cavity and fretboard and they sent them the same day. I'm not sure if the EMG's are factory, but the wiring in the cavity looks very nice (I can upload the pic I got tonight if anyone cares). The same guitar was up on eBay last year. Apparently, it ended up being sold off-eBay; the person selling it now is different. If you're just looking for a Studio Custom, this one might be slightly above-market price-wise. But it has an ebony fretboard and a fully bound headstock (both of which are specal order items), so I'd be willing to pay more for it on that basis. Finally, you might want to ask about the neck carve if you're looking for something in particular. I remember either the seller last year mentioning something about the neck or me asking, but either way, I don't have that information now. It's probably smaller than Hamer's current vintage carve, but I don't know if it's a shredder-thin style neck or not. Being from 1994, it could be anything. Makes no difference to me, but if it does to you, ask them about it. They might not be able to characterize it in terms of a Hamer Modern vs. Vintage carve, but they seem to be very accommodating to me; they'd probably take actual measurements if you asked. -Austin
veatch Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 That one is scarily tempting. I have a '96 Studio with a similar '59 burst. That era was my favorite for that burst. Much more subtle change from inside to out. The ebony board and the bound headstock are two things i wish i had...If i didn't something already coming, i'd grab it...
psc3251 Posted March 2, 2009 Author Posted March 2, 2009 Thanks Austin- hey, you've got plenty of Hamers already!!!! Lol Lots of good info there- you guys are the biz......the funny thing is I'd probably take the EMG's out- but then again I've never used them- I prefer the typical look with the open coils....but you never know! The biggest problem I'll probably have is shipping to Scotland- I've contacted them- but usually they don't want to ship out of the US.......understand that fully! So we'll see what reply they send. Yeh- noticed it was ebony right away mmmmm, nice........ I thought the bound headstock was only something available on the latest Studio's- you mentioned '94- is it that old- I though it might be 2004 from the serial...? Not too bothered about neck sizes, my 91 sunburst is thin maple, but my Les Pauls are pretty meaty- so I'm happy either way...... If you buy it, can I buy your chambered Studio??!!! Ha Cheers, Dave
jisham Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Despite the haters, EMGs absolutely RIP in Studio Customs. I used to have two set up with EMGs and they sounded freekin' killer. Add an ebony board and bound headstock...well, it's a no brainer if you have the funds IMO.

Ha Cheers, Dave I can tell it's a '94 because it has the larger logo. The bound headstock has been around as an option for a long time, but it only became a standard part of the Studio Custom package a couple years back. I love ebony fretboards and bound headstocks, so I'll probably bid on it out of habit, assuming it doesn't get too ridiculous. If I do end up getting it, something's going, but hopefully not the chambered Studio -Austin
psc3251 Posted March 2, 2009 Author Posted March 2, 2009 Ha- new it was going to happen- they'll sell to US or Canada only- So it's over to you guys!!!! They did ask if I had a friend in the US who could buy it and forward it to me........ seems a bit silly- unless any of you fantastic guys fancy being a 'broker'

specialk Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Not that I plan on bidding, , but the seller said they would take USPS money orders or a cashiers check for payment. So no PayPal needed.... Hmmmm.........
hamertek98 Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Only an hour away from me and real close to marcnorth. Too bad no money.

Hmmmm......... Trust me, any seller on eBay would take USPS money order or cashier's check over PayPal. Now, why a buyer would actually want to use one of those over PayPal is beyond me -Austin
PRSman Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 I used to own a '94 Studio Custom with a trem (!) in Quilt Blue Burst that I purchased new and it had creme EMG 89s from the factory in it. I couldn't stand them and pulled them for a Duncan '59 and Custom, as the EMGs just wouldn't clean up enough for me without rolling off the volume. Great pickups for metal and hard rock, but I struggled to get a decent clean tones out of them. Cool guitar, wish I still had it...
