RoyB, your explanation of finish thickness and using finish as filler ties into what was said at the Music Man factory tour from ten years ago. There were a lot of employees sanding bodies and necks, maybe more employees on that one aspect of production than any other group. It was explained that the goal was to create as smooth a finish as possible to to avoid using filler.

I have no idea why anyone would want to avoid using filler because polyester sealer is a lot my restrictive to the wood than a vinyl or oil based filler ever would be, but that's Leo's production style showing through. He used Fullerplast with Fender, and polyester with both Musicman and G&L. Truth is it's cheap and it's fast.

I've done a fair amount of production work with polyester sealer but I always use pore filler, why spray more than you have to?

Ok, so maybe they said "less filler" rather than "filler." The point they made at the factory was that Music Man spends a lot of time on sanding before finishing.

So when I talked to the folks at Peekamoose (the Steinberger forums name them as the best place to have work done on old Steinies) they told me not to get a refin because they used some sort of gel-coat or some such thing.

The gel-coat is only used on the composite GL (guitar) and XL (bass) "paddle" instruments.
