atquinn Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 Epi-style ones preferable (as opposed to Firebird-style). Something with snob appeal like Lollars or Duncan Antiquities although I could live with Dimarzios. And I need those P90 mount surround-thingies too. Anyone got some they're looking to move or is my cheap ass going to have to buy new? -Austin

hamerhead Posted September 10, 2009 Posted September 10, 2009 GFS's are actually pretty decent (sorry!), but I have a set of crappy DiMarzios that would go cheap........ I might have hardware at home, too. I'll check when I get there.
atquinn Posted September 10, 2009 Author Posted September 10, 2009 I had a minibucker/hot minibucker set of Dimarzios in an Eclipse and I thought they were very nice, so I'd definitely be interested. And JohnnyB, that's exactly what I'm talking about.-Austin
analogsystem Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 I have a mini humbucker made by a boutique builder in Oregon called Vintage Vibe.I have a p90 sized creme ring for it too. I had it installed in a LP deluxe. This pickup has 12 alnico poles instead of a bar magnet so it's a little more "fendery" or like a Tele deluxe humbucker (but mini). None of the pole pieces are showing so it looks like a firebird pup in the creme plastic ring of a LP deluxe mini. It's an amazing sounding pickup, and I took it out of the deluxe before selling the guitar. I just don't see myself buying another LP so it's on the block.I paid $150 to have it made but I'll sell it here for $90 shipped. Thanks!-DaveAlso you should note that firebird pickups have threaded pickup ears and LP deluxe style mini humbuckers do not. The way you install mini humbuckers in their rings is by soldering 2 nuts on either side of the pickup ear. This makes the 2 screws, the pickup, and the pickup ring into one assembly. This is because the pickups screw into the body on an LP deluxe, but firebird pickups mount to rings which suspend the pickup in the cavity.
atquinn Posted September 11, 2009 Author Posted September 11, 2009 I plan on using the installation method shown by Jason Lollar in his video series here: which I believe will work with any type of minihumbucker? -Austin
Sam Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 Are we going to get to see this P-90 Studio before you desecrate it? Mmm, soapy goodness.
atquinn Posted September 11, 2009 Author Posted September 11, 2009 Are we going to get to see this P-90 Studio before you desecrate it? It's just a regular goldtop Studio P90. I'll be attempting to take some pictures this weekend, but for now here's one from the guy I bought it from: Sounds pretty good, but my Special sounds better (or, more accurately, I'm more used to the way my Special sounds), so this one's getting the minihumbucker treatment, which is good, cause that's why I bought it! -Austin
JohnnyB Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 And JohnnyB, that's exactly what I'm talking about. That's what I thought. In 2000 I bought an MIK Gretsch Synchromatic archtop w/floating minibucker. The pickup looked like the New York style mini, but it was a clangy-sounding cheap Asian knockoff. At the time, I couldn't find any good New York style mini's anywhere. Then I found a NOS Johnny Smith on eBay, which is a New York mini with a built-in bracket for mounting it from the end of the fretboard. This transformed the instrument. It is one sweet pickup; very dynamic and very expressive. Now Gibson has released the mini-buckers pre-mounted in P-90 adapter rings, just as you would find in a Les Paul Deluxe. Although it's not the cheapest pickup around, the street price seems reasonable if it transforms your Archtop GT into the guitar of your dreams. Available from Sweetwater.
jwhitcomb3 Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 I dropped a set of Gibson Mini Re-issues into my Arcthop GT and it sounded (and looked) amazing. If I could have any one of my law school casualties back, it would be that one.I have a set of new Gibson Minis, but they are in gold. Still waiting for a black Archtop GT or Eclipse to drop 'em into...-Jonathan
