Saddle height screws for sustainblock?

BadgerDave

Question

Posted

I have a couple of guitars with sustain block bridges where the some of the saddle height adjustment screws extend above the saddle. I prefer to have them flush or lower so I don't feel them when resting my hand on the bridge.

Does anyone have a source for short versions of these screws? Will the Fender Strat bridge screws fit?

Thanks!!!!

Allparts had screws that were right for the 4 center saddles, but either too long or too short (I think they were 1/4 and 3/8) for the high and low E saddles. I filed the longer ones to work.

Call Greg. He might have another source.

original spec would be 4-40 set screws 1/4" long in black oxide with a cup point (mcmaster-carr part number 91375A106 at www.mcmaster.com $8.62 per 100 screws). You would want to go with the 3/16" long version for the low and high E saddles (part number 91375A105 $8.40 per 100).

I would suggest a couple of modifications from the stock ones:

1) get the stainless steel version 18-8SS - they will not rust into place like the original black oxide coated screws

2) get the oval-point version. this will not chew up the surface of the bridge at the contact point (cup points are designed to dig in to the target material for locking; a round point provides less damage to the mating surface).

the part number for stainless steel socket head set screws 4-40 thread oval point in 18-8 stainless steel 3/16" long is 92778A044 at mcmaster-carr $5.32 per 50 screws).

I have plenty of leftover parts from my 2FIG days - PM or email me at stongemondotaoldotcom with your snail mail address and I will PIF you some of the 3/16" stainless steel ones (lemmee know how many you need).

I figured everybody would want to know a good source for these. You can always take standard hardware like screws etc in to your local Home Depot or Lowes to identify it (guitar builders rarely use custom parts unless they absolutely have to lol). If they don't have suitable hardware in stock, you can look it up at mcmaster.com.

Reading the topic, I was going to recommend contacting Stonge. I see he has chipped in already with some terrific info - he should know all about that stuff!

BTW - see ya next month, Stonge.
