Zoner Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 Hey all, I'm thinking a Phantom GT or Proto would be a great solution to my need for a triple-coil rig for gigging. I have developed a quirk regarding the "triple" thing - I ride a motorcycle with 3 cylinders, eat 3 meals a day, and also have my 3 nipple situation to blame, now I just need another guitar with said configuration. I have an ancient Ibanez Iceman with a triple-coil and it is too dear to me to flog in the clubs I play these day, so let me know who has what and how much if you would be so kind. Also, I thought I read somewhere that in order to offer items for sale here, I need to achieve a certain level of posts? Truth or fiction? I need to sell my Chappy and a 2-Tek Cruise 5 to fund any purchases and would love to offer them to the "true Believers" first. Thanks. Z
HamStd Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 Zoner: The Phantom GT has a standard humbucker not the humbucker + single coil together. The Phantom A5 and A7 have the "triple pickup". Peter.
BruceM Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 Hey Z, Here's my unholy triumvirate of triple-coil trouble, posed upon the spectator couch of the den of iniquity known as the 4-THREE-2-1 Club. I just might be willing to part with one of these, and since you're local, we can do the old cash for merchandise swap face-to-face. Let me know if you've got any interest. Bruce
Zoner Posted August 26, 2005 Author Posted August 26, 2005 Bruce, I am chomping at the bit to lay my mitts on a Phantom to see how the necks agree with me. I am a fan of big, round clubby necks so any indication of neck profile will help me narrow my focus. Those are some VERY nice pieces, and would be most welcome at my residence (where hopefully you all can sit upon MY couch soon) and I am certainly interested in talking about a deal. Is the flamey one in the middle an Ebay thing from the last several months by any chance? I saw one in sort of a Gretch Orange sell a while back but had to kill any thought of jumping when the price went where it did, but it sure was a stunner as yours appears to be. Z
Zoner Posted August 26, 2005 Author Posted August 26, 2005 Peter, thanks for the clarification. Were the Phantoms still available in the 90's, or better yet, are they still available to order? Z
silentman Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 The phantoms were not available for a time in the 90's. Then reissued with a flametop. You can order a new one as recently proven by our very own gus.
tomteriffic Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 The middle one is a Phantom Custom in Vintage Orange, kind of Gretsch-y color but deeper and richer. It dates (probably) to 97 or 98. My Phantom Custom has a big, hefty neck on it, probably the biggest of any Hamer I've got. Sorry, it's not for sale, tho. Old pickguard.... New One...
anotherfreak2 Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 WOW!!!!! BruceM that Vintage orange is a Beauty!!!! Zoner, if you are needing to move a Cruise V let me know, I seem to always have a student that wants mine. I could help facilitate some moving-of-the-gear for yas.
BruceM Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 I've had my orange phantom custom for 5 or 6 years. It was among my first late 90s Hamer purchases, and definitely helped lead to my current addiction, even though I had some heart-stopping moments of doubt before it arrived. I was an ebay novice, and the guitar didn't meet the reserve. I contacted the seller after the auction ended, agreed to pay his reserve price, and mailed off my personal check. It was about 6 weeks before the guitar finally showed up, and I really thought that I had been taken. When the seller finally returned my calls, it turns out he had been out of town for a few weeks. All's well that ends well, though. As much as I like orange, I still favor the other stock color of that era (amberburst I think?), like Tom's pictured above. Joe (earachemyeye) brings one over frequently, and it ALWAYS photographs well, and sounds great. Check it out below. My orange one doesn't make it out of the case much these days, as I favor the all-mahogany tone of my tobaccoburst over the maple-cap tone of the orange custom. Here's BillW playing Joe's guitar, which made the rounds that evening:
tomteriffic Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 Mine got an extra knob, courtesy of Stevie Damn Clay, which allows for independent switching of the middle pickup and a coil-tap of the bridge. It also allows independent volume control of the single-coils and bridge pickup. Very versatile mod and it now satisfies my need for a Hamer set-neck construction axe with single-coils, without getting all Floydy and such. The maple top adds the ping to the top end that the single-coils need.At first, I had my doubts about it too, but some adjustment and a change to the bridge pickup gt me happy.I think I may have bid on the Vintage Orange one and got beat out by the guy that eventually put it back on eBay sold it to Bruce. I think it's a drop-dead gorgeous finish.
