HAMERMAN Posted September 4, 2005 Posted September 4, 2005 I run a Pod XT into a Vibrolux Reverb so I would have to say both.
jwhitcomb3 Posted September 4, 2005 Posted September 4, 2005 Fender Cyber-Deluxe. Portable, LOUD, versatile, great direct outs, flexible effects and sounds great. I can run my cord straight into the amp and just use a MIDI floorboard to run everything. I can get at every preset in the amp with at most three foot taps, and can edit on the fly with my feet. There's a learning curve, but once you know it it's fast and intuitive. If it didn't occasionally crash I don't think I'd ever seek another amp. Fortunately crashes are infrequent and when it crashes it just sticks on the last preset and just takes a power cycle to restore.I'll be selling my only tube amp shortly (Lexicon Signature 284 with Lexicon 2 x 10 cabinet).-Jonathan
Brooks Posted September 4, 2005 Posted September 4, 2005 i vote both, kinda. i use my duotone both direct (acoustic out) & thru a yamaha magicstomp (mag pups out) both into a small PA for acoustic duo gigs. i often rehearse w/ the full band thru a tech21 TM10, but the few gigs we do i bring my carr rambler.
Monacosis Posted September 4, 2005 Posted September 4, 2005 I sometimes use my Roland Cube 30 for lessons and practice, but my default live amps are tube. I'm not a vintage or tube snob by any means; I just seem to be drawn tothat sound. Current rig: MB Subway Blues - 20 watt non-MV class A 10 inch combo. Very lite and loud. A bit on the dark side, but so am I mike
SteveE9C6 Posted September 5, 2005 Posted September 5, 2005 Since I primarily play pedal steel as my steady live gig, I use a bit of a hybrid. My rack system for pedal steel:Evans Stereo Pre Amp (Solid State and very clean... the jazz players dream)TC M-One Effects for delay and reverbVHT 2-90-2 Tube power amp Two Pacific cabs, each having a Peavey BW 15I have on order a hand made all tube stereo preamp which is called "Revelation". All PTP hand wired.. pure tube. Made specifically for pedal steel players by a fellow named Brad Sarno. I am looking forward to it. At one time I used a Mesa Boogie Studio Pre into the VHT, but it just wasn't quite clean enough for me.The name of the game in pedal steel is clean gain. Now, I do play several songs each nite on regular six string. I use my Artist or my EJ Strat into a PVY Classic 50 212 which has been modded with Reverend Speakers, JJ's, new caps and such. This is the workhorse which stays out on the road in its flight case.I have a job this weekend at the Colorado County Fair with country star Daryl Worley. I'm thinking about using my Rivera M100 combo for guitar just for fun.I've also got the following I keep in my home studio:Rivera M100 2x12 Combo (2003 model)Marshall DSL100 1/2 StackVibroluxLine 6 Flextone IIPeavey Profex into a PX300Transtube 112Johnson J StationMy first amp.... a sears 6 watt with an 8 inch speaker. circa 1960 (Still got the guitar too, a Silvertone Jupiter)I don't see any reason to limit your options.
darc Posted September 6, 2005 Posted September 6, 2005 I haven't owned a tube amp for many years now, and my ears were probably less refined when I sold off the last one, but at the time, for my purposes, things sounded markedly better and got much easier when I went from tubes to modeling. I don't try to pretend that modeling sounds "as good as tubes" (a stupid argument either way, presupposing that all tube amps have some common quality among them that can be quantified vs. all digital amps.) But the flexibility, programmability, low-maintenance, etc. have made the modelers a more fun, more creative, and (as an added bonus) more practical tool for me. And moreso in the studio, where you can eliminate hardware and work exclusively with native plugins. For those of us who wear musician/ engineer/ producer hats all at once this eases the burden.Funny thing - 15 years ago I was hung up on tube amps for the high gain structure. Now the only time I hear something uniquely "tube" that appeals to me, it's in a nice warm clean tone. For high-gain, the better modelers walk all over any of the tube amps I've had an opportunity to play.
sirDaniel Posted September 6, 2005 Author Posted September 6, 2005 They make amps without tubes? you talk big. You have BOTH too. a JStation AND a DUOverb. ...and a nice collection of tube amps.
