Passenger tire recommendation

In June 2004 I got a set of the newly released Michelin HydroEdge tires for a crazy deal at Costco ($78 ea.) and posted my impressions of this tire--everything was better--ride, handling, cornering, wet traction, dry traction, and wear. This year I needed some tires for the Lincoln Town Car I just bought. In the ensuing several years, the HydroEdge has emerged as the category leader. With increased demand plus rising oil prices, this time around they would have cost me $135/tire, even from Costco. With balancing & sales tax, that's about $656 out the door.

So I searched for an alternative, and boy, did I find it. At Sam's Club I got the BF Goodrich Radial T/A Pro Touring Series (model 97T) in the not insubstantial 225/60R-16 size for $88.77 per, or $458.89 out the door with balancing and sales tax, a full $200 less. Sam's always has a $70/set of 4 discount for a featured brand, so every 4 mos. or so it's Goodrich's turn, so they can be had as low as $388 out the door (or less if you have a lower sales tax rate).

Anyway, this is a helluva set of tires. My other tires were new but cheap--some no-name the dealer slapped on to get the car off the lot. Putting on these Goodriches felt like I'd spent $1500 in chassis upgrades--better shocks, adjusted spring rates, and anti-roll bars. Cornering is far flatter. Ride is much improved. Noise is lower, but where these really kick ass is how they track on any road surface--macadam, concrete, pothole patches, striated for water drainage--these tires are unflappable and continue to go exactly where you point'em. I didn't realize how much my other tires were making the car drift and wander until I realized how much more relaxed I am driving now because I'm not subconsciously correcting for drift, road abberations, and general tire squirreliness. On top of that, the tires turn easier when doing tight maneuvers in a parking lot. How do they do that while having better traction in all other circumstances?

The wear rating on these is very high (640), though not quite as high as the HydroEdge (800). On top of all this, though, these Goodriches are M&S rated, which the HydroEdges are not.

So anyway, performance at/near the top of class, stupid cheap, great traction in all conditions, and as good at tracking and cornering as you're going to find for a passenger car short of stupid money. Highly recommended.

Ditto.

I had a set of these on my Mazda 6 and the wife just wore her set out. She got 80k on hers. We put a set of Copper tires on her car this time around because we got them out the door for $400.00, Besides, with 195k on her car this will be her last set anyway.

I put a set of Falken Ziex 912 on my Mazda 6 this time. I'm surprised at how good these have been. I have put 20k on them so far and have had no issues. Cornering and ride are about the same, but they are much more quiet than the Goodrich's were.

I had a set of BF Goodrich Long Trails on my 02 Santa Fe. Nice ride and amazing longevity. I took the car in for a inspection at a 100,000 miles. It passed but the mechanic said you might want to think about getting new tires next year. I told the guy I have been thinking about getting new tires for about the last 40,000 miles since these are the origionals but they always pass. I got new tires at 105,000 but the dealer said they stopped making the Long Trails. I know why. They were not making any money on replacement. One and done. Always been impressed with BF Goodrich for that.

I just bought BFGoodrich Long Trail Tour in August. So far, great tire.

Really? Maybe they aren't making them in your size or Tire Rack has the last of them.

My wifes '03 Santa Fe has about 50k on it, I sure like those oem BFGs, lots and lots of tread left, quiet too. Not much bad to say about the Santa Fe either.

Now for a drivers tire  Dunlop Durezza Star Spec. =good

Tires, pretty much all of 'em, are an amazing value these days, aren't they? The go 40-80k miles, pretty much worry free, for what, $100 per on typical passenger car sizes? That's just plain cheap.

Yep. I remember when U.S. Rubber (now Uniroyal) came out with a no-compromise tire in around 1969 that was around $75 ea., which would be $434 today. You can bet that any tires at mid-pack on up today would outperform that Uniroyal in every way. Even so, the tires that came on the used car I got in October, sourced from the same Chinese plant that makes Falken, weren't very good. However, the Goodrich T/A Touring Pro's I got from Sam's Club in January were less than $89 ea. (and are $72 ea. when on sale) and are well above average regarding wear, noise, rolling resistance, flat cornering, handling, and are even mud & snow rated.

$89 today would have been $14.50 in 1969. The only tires that cheap back then were used or re-treaded bias-ply tires.

You lucky boys... on my old S3 I was changing a front or rear set at least annually - thats about 10 to 12k miles (20-20k annually!) and each pair of tyres was £270 fitted - after Bens special discount! on Michellin Pilot Sport PS2s and 3s

The front Uniroyals on my current S3 (yeah I'm boring) are looking knackered at the sidewall after 6k miles from fresh when I bought the car. I put it down to 'enthusiastic press-on' driving...!

Surely there are some cuffy cross ply remoulds I can get - erm no!
