stobro Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Over the years, I've owned a couple of basses with active pickups. Besides not sounding very good to my ear- too "hi-fi" without much midrange character- the batteries always seem to die at the worst time.I have a USA Chap bass right now with active EMGs (P-J setup) that I'm thinking of converting to passive. It's a bolt-neck with a two-piece solid quilt maple body. Any suggestions on pickups that will warm up the tone?-Brandon
SirDouglas Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 You aint the only one.... everysingle emg is comin out .. no more batts fer me neither... im gonna use X2ns and Split Ps in all mine Sir Douglas Randy
cmatthes Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Some of us have had luck with the Rios - they make some pretty powerful stuff.Depending on what you're looking for in a traditional Soapbar/P or P/J, DiMarzio or Duncans are always workable.
marcnorth Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 I'm still looking for a DiMarzio Model G DP120 in cream. I picked up a NOS one a month or so ago from ebay but I still need another one.You can get the X2N-B's at this place. Its listed under the custom order stuff. Comes in lots of colors.http://www.jayturserguitar.com/noname3.html
Jimbilly Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Based on how good my Rio BBQ Bucker sounds in my SSII, I'd give their bass pups a try, -assuming they make bass pups.
marcnorth Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 They make the Pittbull. I think you have to route the cavities deeper to use these. Seems like BCR did a show and tell on it if I remember right.http://www.riograndepickups.com/5.html
tafkathundernotes Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 If you're doing P-J replacements, I like the Fralins.
serial Posted September 8, 2005 Posted September 8, 2005 I have a set of JBass Bartolini passives that I want to install that I've had lying around. I bought them after numerous recommendations, so we'll see.The Rio Pitbulls have made a world of difference in my B08M, but those are humbucking sized. Rio has P/J pickups, but not sure if they are the same breed or not.
