Phil H Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 I found some locking tuners on E-bay they say they will fit a LP. They are Scaller brand and look like direct replacements. The number on the package is TK 0976-010 Schaller 3X3 .Im putting them on a 96 Special Fm. My question is do you think they will fit?Is the thickness of the headstock the same,on an Lp as a Special?ThanksPhil

I just can't imagine Schaller having different versions of their 3x3 stuff between locking and non.
zenmindbeginner Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 The kind that you are buying do NOT retrofit and will require 6 new holes.Schaller has two kinds of locking tuners. The one that retrofits perfectly with the stock Schaller 3x3s cannot be sold here in the U.S.This is the kind that retrofits the M6A tuners that came stock. You want these. This is the kind that you can get everywhere and that requires drilling another 6 holes in the headstock. You don't want these. The shitty thing is that Thomanns used to carry them but appear to only carry the same kind we can get here, which require drilling. I'd send Schaller an email asking where in the hell to buy the proper top loading locking tuner which retrofits the M6A tuners with the big wings. Tell them that you do NOT want the 2900 series with the offset screw holes.
Phil H Posted August 21, 2011 Author Posted August 21, 2011 Thanks so much for the help, I appreciate everyones input! I wasnt sure so Im glad I asked. Thanks again!PhilIM ALSO HAPPY TO BE A MEMBER OF THE HFC!!
belgian Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 Thomann still has them :http://www.thomann.de/be/schaller_7502.htmI ordered a set for punkavenger a while ago.
gorch Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 There is a difficulty with Schaller that they have a product option for nearly any occasion in their program. However, many product options are hard to get. Schaller only sells to resellers. As to Thomann, they are the largest music related shop in Germany and probably in Europe. What they have in stock you can get. What they don't have in stock you don't get. I had my experiences made with Schaller tuners and Thomann in the past. Finally, I jumped on to Sperzels, bought somewhere else. For the US, thinking about Schaller means considering metric vs. non-metric measures. That's always problematic to deal with. Schaller is a German company which, typically, thinks in metric.
carfish7 Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 Thanks for debunking my idle speculation, ZMB. I should learn to not take guesses at honest and direct questions."I don't know" is something that should be uttered more frequently I think...........

"I don't know" is something that should be uttered more frequently I think........... Absolutely not, you gave great advice because the locking tuners that retrofit cost double to three times what you can get a used pair of the ones with the offset holes that require some drilling. The hole is tiny and can easily be drop filled... it's almost a better solution than to pay the HUGE exchange rate penalty of buying from the UK or Europe. $95 Euros? Holy smokes, that's nearly a million US dollars! He's better off taking your advice and drop filling the old hole , then ordering from Thommans and waiting forever and paying out the nose. Schaller doesn't make it easy to buy from them in the US and Hamer were sort of dolts for using their machine heads. Schaller are no better than Grovers IMHO. Allparts have the highest prices around (and they use crappy proprietary plastic packaging... I like the paper Schaller boxes myself, they are snazzy) and we are almost forced to go through them... Stew Mac sells some Schaller stuff, but Allparts has access to 95% of their products.
Phil H Posted August 21, 2011 Author Posted August 21, 2011 Isnt that crazy $178.00 with shipping , I will fill holes or go with a different brand.I just thought I could drop on tuners like the Sperzels on my G&L.Thanks so much for all your help!!Phil
