Portable fun vocal rig (Mic/amp/effects/cheap)?

Question

Posted

My daughter wants to have some sort of mic and speaker system to sing through around the house.

I am imagining a small amp with perhaps some onboard vocal effects and a decent mic/interface.

This is just for fun, so doesn't need to be too nice, but I'd like something decent.

Price is an object.

Any suggestions?

Gracias.

My kids are 4 and 7, they LOVE singing through my Boss Microcube, so much that I had to buy a 2nd one. It's very basic, but loud enough for around the house. I plug whichever mic is handy into an old xlr to 1/4 cable, -the Microcube has a microphone 'setting', and some basic effects. I get a couple of hours out of six rechargeable AAs.

For more loud, more effects, I have a 16ch Yamaha board w/ effects that cost me $200, that into a powered Wharfedale or Mackie, which are readily available and not terribly expensive, and you'd get some use out of real pa stuff too. You can get used chinese built small mixers with effects for less than $100, plug that into a cheap-ish keyboard amp (used Roland, Peavey etc) and you could have a small $200 pa.

I think you should try the Microcube and see how it goes.

Now that sounds perfect - thanks! I've always sort of wanted an excuse to have a Micro Cube anyway.

Any good rugged kid-proof mic recommendations?

SM 57 are rugged and used on the U.S. presidential podium for over 40 years (or so I read somewhere, I think?).

We have one of these at work. I have no idea what it costs, but it works pretty good.

I think the best mic value is the Sennheiser e835, they sound really good and they are durable, I'll bet you could bin one cheap on ebay these days. The sm57/58s are always acceptable, but I've got 2 58s that just don't sound right, I think there's something wrong with them, and I've never had a problem with an 835.
