Shipping a guitar from U.S to Canada?

Anything I need to watch out for? Taxes, tariffs, fees, etc...

Inside the U.S. I usually ship via USPS and have never had a problem. Any reason not to use the post office to Canada? Any advantage to FedEx or UPS?

Any experience or insight would be greatly appreciated.

I've only shipped via Fedex to Canada. Was a bit of a hassle, as I showed up at the depot, and was told they could not process the shipment there. I had to open an online account, fill out all the information, print label, then return to the depot. That's about all I can provide.

Murkat sends USPS, Greg uses Fedex. Both work. On the Canadian side...oh wait, does anyone care?

I'm a regular importer of goods from USA into Canada --- you needs the following officially: A CI (Commercial Invoice) listing the item, the price paid for it, the currency (USD or otherwise) the country or manufacture, shipper, consignee etc, and the harmonized code (9202.90.9010 - see below) ... If it's from USA/Canada/Mexico there are no duties or tariffs under NAFTA. Otherwise it is subject to a 6% duty (most favoured Nation tariff). Officially the Canadian receiving or buying the guitar will be levied taxes (sales tax, Federal and Provincial if applicable). These can be collected COD ---

It's hit and miss really if all fees and or taxes are levied and collected --- it's hit or miss depending on how shipped, value, and how lucky you are. As long as you state that all duties and taxes are the responsibility of the buyer you are okay (clearly on your invoice and your declaration with the shipper/broker).

That said - if you are dealing with a penny pincher, he may get all butt hurt when the tax man tries to collect and refuse the shipment -- costing you money -- make sure you know who or what you are dealing with.

I've shipped very few guitars across the border, but I've shipped lots of smaller things. I've had repeat problems with USPS/Canada Post and UPS. FEDEX is the way to go in my opinion. I've used them dozens of times without incident.

When shipping internationally make sure the buyer knows he will have to pay taxes (most likely the same as he'd pay at a local shop, they're HIS countries taxes) and brokerage fees, and that brokerage fees can be a lot. Many people get surprised at this and then blame the seller. "I said I'd pay $X for the guitar, not $X+$Z !!"

With Canada the best way to go is using USPS. Insurance can be purchased, there's no brokerage fees and sometimes (haven't realized what's the pattern, but it does occur) I don't even pay any customs fees. Also, so far in my own case they have been 100% reliable.
