How to get best Internet performance?

Question

We are moving next month and have the opportunity to select a new Internet provider and equipment. My initial research reveals that neither Verizon FIOS or CenturyLink is available in my new neighborhood (Prospect Heights, IL).

I currently have AT&T Uverse internet, which seems barely adequate. Are there other options out there? I haven't been paying attention for a few years.

What about hardware? Can I boost performance with a hot-rodded modem or computer?

Thanks!

Cable. Yeah, I know, but the speed is unbeatable. Plus you could bundle your land line and TV. I'd have it, but we're about a 1/4 mile outside of civilization.

I vote for cable as well. Internet, TV, Xbox -- all can work at the same time with speeds that get everything done. I just use a cable router from the company and then an Apple wireless modem for all the stuff in the house to find the signal.

What speed of U-Verse do you have? Can't imagine 24 Mbps not being adequate:

The maximum U-verse speed available in the area is "up to" 12 Mbs, which translates to actual speeds of 5 Mbs at best, usually much less.

Going with cable would mean doing business with Comcast, a company known for constant rate increases and customer satisfaction ratings similar to the DMV and the Mexican penal system.

My other issue is that I have a big investment in DirecTV equipment, am addicted to the NFL Sunday Ticket and don't want to switch to a different provider for TV service.

Yes, we have to deal with Charter communications for our cable service. It may be convenient, but their rates are always changing and the "bundling" package is a scam of sorts.

You could bundle phone and internet on cable or just get cable internet. That is what we do and keep direct tv.
