Hamer sunburst..unique serial number

Question

I recently scored a USA model Hamer Sunburst off of the local Craigslist. I paid under $300.00 for the guitar...the seller wasn't playing it and needed the cash so I made out very well it sounds great..one piece gold color maple top..dot neck..original Dimarzio pickups. But the unique thing is the serial number...in small gold numbers it's marked 001 on the back of the headstock. I have had these before and we all know this isn't the usual serial markings. The one pot I could make out in the control cavity had a 79 code date. I actually got in touch with Jol Dantzig and sent him pics. He stated it could be a possible refin but the numbers look like something Hamer used in the factory...any help is appreciated. Having some trouble putting pics on here but I think you get the idea from the description..thank you.

Feel free to email me the pics and I'll post them for you if you aren't using Photobucket.

That isn't a known Hamer serial sequence, so agreed that it is odd, and could be a refin.

I know of this guitar-first ran into it 15 years ago or so when I was starting the Hamer Registry. I'm pretty sure it's the same guitar by your description (I remember the top as being natural, but it may have yellowed. It's a '79 and a refin. Still, 79s are my favorite Sunbursts, so it's a cool guitar, but definitely a refin and renumbering (not at the factory). Definitely not a prototype.

Judging from the headstock, I'd agree that it's a '79. For $300, even for a refin, you got one of those "scores of the century"!

Pretty sure that's the one-fantastic score-the pickups are almost worth that!

The PUPs and bridge are worth more than $300. Great score, congrats!

Thanks for the info and posting the pics. Do you know if the whole guitar is refinished or just the back? I always wondered why people get rid of the serial number but it is a great guitar

My guess would be all (but headstock face), but hard to tell from the pics.
